Eurofighter makes multirole software advance

Messaggio da Phant » 3 ottobre 2012, 18:03

Flightglobal.com ha scritto:
Eurofighter makes multirole software advance

The Eurofighter consortium has moved a step closer to delivering a package of major enhancements for the Typhoon combat aircraft, with test flights having been performed over recent weeks in all four partner nations.

Final elements of the P1E(b) upgrade were taken to the air using four instrumented production aircraft, including IPA 7, which was flown by EADS company Cassidian with the modifications in late August.

Enhancements include integrating the Litening targeting pod and IRIS-T missile

To deliver what Eurofighter describes as "a robust simultaneous multirole capability" through the second part of a Phase 1 Enhancement programme, the development will be delivered to the air forces of Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK as a new software release by the end of 2013.

Key elements of the P1E(b) package include the full integration of Rafael's Litening targeting pod and precision-guided bombs; a combination previously cleared for use by the Royal Air Force only under a UK-funded effort. Also in the weapons field, the package brings the full digital integration of the Diehl BGT Defence IRIS-T short-range air-to-air missile.

Coalition activities will be improved through the addition of Mode 5 identification friend-or-foe equipment and updated Multifunctional Information Distribution System/Link 16 functionality, with improved radios also part of the package.

"The P1E programme is a major milestone in the development of Eurofighter Typhoon, giving the weapon system seamless air-to-ground integration and forming the baseline for future enhancements," Eurofighter says. The latter will include the integration of an active electronically scanned array radar and MBDA's Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.

RAF Typhoon upgrade

Messaggio da Phant » 4 dicembre 2012, 1:43

Key.aero ha scritto:
RAF Typhoon upgrade complete

Under the programme known as Retrofit 2, 43 Royal Air Force Typhoon aircraft have been upgraded to the Tranche 1 Block 5 standard, which includes installation of the forward looking infra-red (FLIR) system, enhancement of the air-to-air capability, introduction of an air-to-surface capability and the ability to use the laser designator pod for precision weapon delivery.

Martin Taylor, BAE Systems' Combat Air Support Director said: "This upgrade programme gives the Royal Air Force Typhoon fleet an improved baseline capability, making it better than it has ever been before. This improved capability will also allow the Royal Air Force greater scope for how they manage the Typhoon fleet."

Air Commodore Keith Bethell, Head of the Fast Air Support Team, Defence Equipment and Support at the Ministry of Defence said:"The Retrofit 2 programme was one of the first steps on our ongoing journey to deliver Typhoon availability and capability through a partnered approach with BAE Systems. This early step helped lead us onto the highly successful Typhoon Availability Service into which Retrofit 2 was then subsumed. The conclusion of the Retrofit 2 programme is a significant milestone on the Typhoon journey and one we will build from as we continue to grow the Typhoon Force."

Over the last six years, a mixture of twin and single seat aircraft have been processed through the programme which has been managed by a team of around 160 employees working in close co-operation with the Royal Air Force/Ministry of Defence fleet management team.

Under the programme, the last aircraft to be handed back to the Royal Air Force is British single seat Typhoon number BS23 (tail number ZJ932). The aircraft originally entered service with 3 Squadron on 10th November 2006, delivering Quick Reaction Alert duties from RAF Coningsby. The aircraft will return to service with XI Squadron to provide a major contribution to the deployable Typhoon Force.

In the early days of the contract it was recognised that synergies could be gained by contracting BAE Systems to also perform primary servicing on the aircraft at the same time as the upgrade programme was being undertaken. This combination of work minimised downtime of the aircraft from the Typhoon fleet and offered significant savings to the customer.

Previously under standalone national contracts, the activity was subsequently subsumed into the wider Typhoon Availability Service (TAS) contract.

All future upgrade and maintenance programmes will be carried out at the RAF Coningsby Typhoon Maintenance Facility.

Typhoon fires Meteor

Messaggio da Phant » 6 dicembre 2012, 18:40

Key.aero ha scritto:
Typhoon fires Meteor

The Meteor Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) has been successfully launched from a Eurofighter Typhoon as part of the aircraft's Future Enhancements Flight Test Programme.

The missile was eject-launched from a rear fuselage missile station, which on Eurofighter Typhoon is semi-conformal for aircraft drag and radar signature reduction. The missile motor was fired, providing data that will allow the missile launch envelope to be expanded. This builds on an earlier series of flight trials, carried out by BAE Systems, where unpowered missiles were used to demonstrate safe separation on the missile.

The flight trials were conducted with integrated support from QinetiQ and MBDA at the firing range in Aberporth, Wales, on December 4. After taking part in the Meteor trials, BAE Systems Typhoon Test Pilot Steve Long said: "By completing these initial Meteor flight trials, Typhoon has taken a significant leap forward in operational capability. As a fighter pilot, you ultimately want the best possible combination of aircraft and advanced weapons to ensure mission success and to get you home safely. The range and performance of the Meteor weapon goes a long way to achieving this - with confidence. A potent long range missile, coupled with a highly agile aircraft gives us a very potent and very powerful mix."

Flightglobal.com ha scritto:
Eurofighter upgrades move closer to operational release

A package of upgrades for the Eurofighter Typhoon has moved closer to operational release, following the completion of flight test activities by consortium partner company Cassidian.

Taking place at company sites in Manching, Germany and Getafe, Spain, the "intensive" test effort, using instrumented production aircraft 4 and 7, has validated the Phase 1 Enhancement (P1E) programme, says Cassidian. This, it adds, "delivers a simultaneous multi-/swing-role capability to the nations' air forces", and will be available to customers from end-2013.

"The Phase 1 Enhancements will provide a significant leap in the Eurofighter's operational capabilities. Deploying multiple weapons with attack constraints simultaneously in all weather has never been easier," says Chris Worning, Eurofighter project pilot at Cassidian.

Key elements of the P1E package include the full integration of Rafael's Litening targeting pod and precision-guided bombs, and the full digital integration of the Diehl BGT Defence IRIS-T short-range air-to-air missile.

Coalition activities will be improved through the addition of Mode 5 identification friend-or-foe equipment, and updated Multifunctional Information Distribution System/Link 16 functionality, with improved radios also part of the package.

Further enhancements, including the integration of MBDA's Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile and an active electronically scanned array radar are also planned.

Eurofighter unveils new upgrade plan

The Eurofighter consortium has unveiled a road-map for the development of a number of further enhancements to the Typhoon combat aircraft to be fielded by operators from late 2015.

Unveiled at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defence Exhibition on 30 October, the development contract was signed by Eurofighter and the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA).

Its proposed Evolution Package 2 consists of a number of improvements including radar enhancements and upgrades to the defensive aids sub-systems (DASS).

In addition, the package will include further improvements to the type's flight control system and the utility control system that will "allow the Typhoon to be more compatible with evolving requirements within the commercial aviation air space environment", it says.

Alberto Gutierrez, chief executive of the Eurofighter consortium, says: “The signature of this contract represents a significant milestone for what is known as the Phase 2 Enhancement programme for the Eurofighter Typhoon. It brings with it a whole raft of enhancements designed to ensure the capability package we offer our customers is the best on offer anywhere in the world.”

Jesus Pinillos Prieto, general manager of NETMA, adds: “Eurofighter Typhoon was designed, from the outset, for capability growth, and this package of enhancements is further evidence that we are building on this fundamental strength. It is something we firmly believe sets us apart from the competition.”

The latest contract follows a deal signed at June's Paris air show to begin integration work on MBDA's Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.

Earlier this week Eurofighter partner company Cassidian revealed that flight-test activities for the Phase 1 enhancements were now complete.

Avvio test MBDA Storm Shadow sul Typhoon

Messaggio da Phant » 6 dicembre 2013, 18:54

Analisidifesa.it ha scritto:

Tranche 2 Typhoons pass Red Flag test

The UK Royal Air Force has debuted its latest standard of the Eurofighter Typhoon at a Red Flag-series exercise at Nellis AFB, Nevada.

Flown by 6 Sqn pilots from RAF Leuchars in Scotland, the Tranche 2-standard aircraft, plus support personnel from the unit and the RAF's 1 Sqn, took part in the Red Flag 14-1 exercise between 27 January and 14 February. The Typhoons were operated in the air-to-air role.

As 2014 progresses, the Tranche 2 Typhoons of the Leuchars wing will progressively work with the multirole P1E upgrade, which includes the addition of capabilities with the Rafael Litening III targeting pod and Raytheon Systems Paveway IV precision-guided bomb. The aircraft will also be relocated to RAF Lossiemouth.

The RAF also sent Tranche 1 Typhoons from its 11 Sqn to participate in a Red Flag exercise last year, and intends to return to Nellis in early 2015 for a full test of its Tranche 2 capability.

First Paveway IV Release for RAF Typhoons at RAF Lossiemouth

The oldest frontline Royal Air Force squadron in the world achieved another first recently (25 November 2014).

No 1(Fighter) Squadron, based at RAF Lossiemouth, successfully released 2 live Paveway IV weapons at Cape Wrath Training Area as part of the Squadron’s task to deliver the latest Typhoon capability upgrade, known as P1Eb.

Officer Commanding 1(Fighter) Squadron, Wing Commander Mike Sutton, said:

“This is another landmark moment for the Typhoon Force, and highlights the aircraft’s potent swing role capability. The successful weapon drops are a superb reflection on the dedication and achievement of everyone who has been involved in this capability enhancement.

“The swing role capability of the Typhoon ensures that we are well equipped to respond to the challenges of contingent operations across the globe, while also maintaining the security of UK skies through the delivery of Quick Reaction Alert, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

P1Eb is predominantly an air to ground capability upgrade; it provides enhancements to the Litening III Laser Designator Pod (LDP) and Helmet Equipment Assembly (HEA) (helmet mounted sight) integration, as well as with Paveway IV. The LDP can now also be used seamlessly with the HEA to visually identify air tracks at long range, as well as identifying, tracking and targeting points on the ground.

The Paveway IV offers increased precision, stand-off, and flexibility of employment, and the Typhoon can release a number of weapons to different targets in a single pass.

1(Fighter) Squadron has conducted 8 Paveway IV drops this week, with a mix of profiles including GPS and laser guidance; pre-planned and target of opportunity using the HEA; and employing both impact and airburst fusing settings on the weapon.

1(Fighter) Squadron will release a further 20 Paveway IV weapons when they deploy to the USA for Exercise Red Flag in January 2015. The Typhoon aircraft will be conducting full swing role training sorties, day and night, fighting through the hostile air and ground threats, and then conducting the Paveway IV releases as part of the missions. These sorties will also involve full integration with the US Air Force F22 Raptor aircraft, which is a key area for the RAF as it looks to introduce the Lightning II in the coming years.

Eurofighter.com ha scritto:
First Storm Shadow missile release from a Eurofughter Typhoon is a success

The Italian aerospace and defence company Alenia Aermacchi, working closely with its Eurofighter partners, has successfully conducted the first release of a Storm Shadow missile from a Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft as part of its missile integration programme.

The trials took place in November and saw the missile being released from the aircraft and tracked by radar up to impact.

Storm Shadow provides a significant leap in the Eurofighter Typhoon’s operational capabilities, enabling the platform to deploy multiple weapons at a very long range well clear of danger from air defences.

Alberto Gutierrez, Chief Executive Officer of Eurofighter GmbH said: “The trials represents an important step forward in the development and integration of the Storm Shadow weapon system onto the Eurofighter Typhoon. The results help pave the way for full integration of the missile onto the aircraft for operational use.”

In parallel to the flight trials led by Alenia Aermacchi, another Eurofighter partner, BAE Systems, has completed the first trial installation of a Storm Shadow missile onto a RAF Typhoon with support from weapons provider MBDA. The confirmation of this procedure is an essential part of the integration contract.

Storm Shadow, already in service with the Italian Air Force and Royal Air Force Tornados, is a conventionally armed, stealthy, long-range stand-off precision weapon designed to neutralise high value targets.

The new weapons system will add the capability to strike in day or night in all-weather conditions, well-defended infrastructure targets such as port facilities, control centres, bunkers, missile sites, airfields and bridges that would otherwise require several aircraft and missions. This is a new addition to the Eurofighter Typhoon’s potent simultaneous multi-/swing-role capabilities.

Powered by a turbo-jet engine, with a range in excess of 250 km, the Storm Shadow missile weighs approximately 1.300kg and is just over 5 metres long. It will be available to operators when the Eurofighter Typhoon Phase 2 Enhancements become operational.

Background Information

Eurofighter Typhoon is the most advanced new generation multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft currently available on the world market. Seven nations (Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Austria, Saudi Arabia and Oman) have already ordered the Eurofighter Typhoon. Eurofighter Typhoon is currently the largest military procurement programme in Europe. Over 265,000 flying hours have already been accumulated and 421 aircraft delivered.

The high technology within the Programme strengthens the European aerospace industry in the international market and secures over 100,000 jobs in 400 companies. Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH manages the programme on behalf of the Eurofighter Partner Companies Alenia Aermacchi, BAE Systems and Airbus Defence and Space in Germany and Spain, which are the most important aviation and aerospace companies in Europe with a turnover of about 123.2 billion euro (2011).

The first tests on Storm Shadow integration for the Eurofighter began in December 2013 with development aircraft IPA2 operated by Alenia Aermacchi. Initially the Early Weapon Integration Flexibility tests featured a configuration of 2 Storm Shadow missiles, 2 AIM-9L Air-to-Air missiles, and 4 under fuselage Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM).

Six further flights were then completed in the following weeks to assess the Storm Shadow’s compatibility with the Eurofighter’s Air Data System and Flutter & Structural Coupling tests were also carried out. An additional later flight was then performed with baseline configuration (2 AIM-9L, 4 under fuselages AMRAAM and 1 Fuel Tank only) for comparative analyses purposes. The assessment of the Performance & Loads on the aircraft while carrying the missiles was done in March 2014 in a programme known as Extended WIF phase 1. Five flights were performed with the Storm Shadows installed and a further three with baseline configuration.

The recent inert drop-tests and store release trials will now be followed by work on the instrumented missiles for the Environmental Data Gathering tests known as Phase 3. Additional work will include flights with the automatic pilot set for new aircraft configuration, and further flights for assessing handling qualities.
