Tacview 1.6.0 is now available

http://tacview.net/download

Delivered, as promised, before the F/A-18, here is: the real-time telemetry!

The long awaited real-time telemetry is here! Use it with DCS World, FSX, Prepar3D, or X-Plane to record and review in real-time a flight in progress. An first draft of the instructor remote control is also available. This tool enables you to control up to four simulators, to assist trainee pilots and reduce their workload.

To prevent cheating, real-time telemetry may be disabled during network sessions depending on the host preferences.

These two new features go naturally well together: Use the real-time telemetry to watch in real time your trainee from outside and inside the cockpit. Help him/her using the remote control to pause its flight simulator and actuate some of its aircraft controls. In the next update, you will be able to directly bind joystick and keyboard to remote control commands.

All Tacview network features are independent and can be combined the way you want. For example, you can combine the real-time telemetry and the online-debriefing to review, with your fellow squadrons leaders, in real-time, a network battle in progress like a red-flag training.

In addition, many updates and fixes are introduced in this version to better enjoy flight review for all your favorite simulators.

While several surprises are on their way for this year, the next major step will be Tacview 2.0. This new version will offer a fully revamped UI, and a will include most of the improvements which have been requested over the years.

Meanwhile several updates are still planned for Tacview 1.6 and maybe 1.7, to offer a smooth transition while waiting for 2.0. For example, you will soon get an integrated static objects editor to easily add navaids to a battlefield and will be able to display analog cockpit instruments to get more intuitive and faster reading while analysing the quality of a flight.

Before everything else: The online debriefing is working again! My apologies for the delay and the inconvenience. This feature was broken because of a change introduced by the real-time telemetry. This is now fixed and everything should work as expected. You may even combine the real-time telemetry and online debriefing to oversee with other officers a battle in progress!

This intermediate version also introduces several fixes and improvements to make the whole debriefing experience smoother:

  • The long-awaited fuel telemetry is here! You can now review the fuel quantity and flow in most of the flight simulators and even in real-life (with the Garmin G1000 for example).
  • Terrain colors have been modified to match the ones used in US VFR charts. It is an experiment with the idea of Tacview 2.0 being able to auto generate virtual VFR/IFR charts for the ground textures. Which should give a final result to the one you can see on Skyvector.
  • Preliminary support has been added of IL-2 Sturmovik: Soon, you should be able to see proper 3d models for the aircraft (some may remain generic because Tacview library is growing up slowly), colors, coalitions, bullets, bombs and everything you can expect from a Tacview debriefing. IL-2 terrains should follow in Tacview 1.6.2.
  • Talking about WWII: The famous DCS: Normandy 1944 Map has been added to Tacview.
It is now possible to display full 3D earth without ocean surface to see submarines. In a future revision, a translucent ocean surface should be visible too.
What’s next?

In the coming revisions of Tacview:
  • All the major IL-2 terrains will be added to Tacview.
  • Because of lack of time, Falcon 4.0 real-time telemetry is still a project. But, be assured that I will do my best to offer you this feature if it is possible to do so.
  • You will get a brand-new static-objects engine with its integrated editor! Handy to easily and quickly add runways, nav-aids and any other objects you would like to see in the world of Tacview.
  • Native support for Open Street Map and Bing Map tiles.
Immagine

FEATURES & CHANGES

• Added fuel quantity and flow for DCS World, X-Plane, FSX, and Garmin G1000
• Added support for custom raw elevation maps with arbitrary coordinates
• Added Pegase and Duo Discus 3d models donated by Benoit ’Windblow’ Wingedsky
• Added terrain high-contrast mode for video projector use
• Added most of IL2 aircraft to Tacview database
• Added support for DCS: Normandy 1944 Map
• Added an option to automatically reconnect the real-time telemetry
• Added Eject & Respawn commands to the remote controls
• Added a status bar icon when real-time telemetry is active
• It is now possible to display 3D oceans to see submarines
• New FAA VFR style terrain color scheme

FIXES

• Fixed a crash in charts when some options where selected
• Online debriefing was not working anymore with Tacview 1.6 final
• It was not possible to change the online debriefing port
• Left ALT was not working properly (e.g. ALT+F4 was not closing Tacview)
• DCS World exporter was not always active and compressing files in zip on a fresh install
• Charts were updated even when not displayed
• X-Plane main aircraft pilot name and importance are now properly exported[/b]

Tacview 1.6.3 is now available!

This intermediate release brings a few new features and several bugs fixes.

The online export has been fixed

After a bit of logic refactoring Tacview 1.6.2 DCS World exporter was not recording online games anymore. The exporter has been fixed. I have test all combinations possible and I think that this is the most reliable version of the exporter so far.

Cockpit instruments

It is now possible to display a 5-pack cockpit instruments in all views. This makes replays even more intuitive, especially during navigation and GA aircraft flight analysis. The cockpit instruments will try to display the IAS, magnetic heading and true altitude when available. When not available, they will respectively fallback to CAS, TAS, and true heading. A future update will display barometric altitude as well as the QNH.

True custom terrain textures

Now, you can display truly custom textures and orthophotos! No need anymore to produce perfect 1x1 degree tiles! All you must do, is to store your PNG and JPEG files in the appropriate folder and to declare your new maps in the appropriate XML file. You can use this feature to display real-life photoreal textures as well as the maps of your favorite region. PNG transparency is supported, so you can overlay several layers.
  • Copy your pictures in C:\ProgramData\Tacview\Data\Terrain\Textures\
  • Copy the file C:\Program Files (x86)\Tacview (beta)\Data\Terrain\Textures\CustomTextureList.xml in C:\ProgramData\Tacview\Data\Terrain\Textures\
  • And declare in it your new pictures. All you need to do, is to declare the latitude/longitude of each corner of your texture. You can easily check them using Google Earth image overlay tool, in the LatLonQuad Location mode.
IL-2 Sturmovik support

IL-2 Sturmovik is now natively supported and all the appropriate elevation maps have been added for more accurate playback especially for ground and naval units.

Enjoy!
Vyrtuoz

• Added IL-2 Sturmovik terrains
• Added support for free custom textures and orthophotos
• Added focus management to remote controls (for buttons and axe shortcuts)
• Improved remote controls modifier assignment
• Doubled remote controls custom commands for a total of 8
• When available, Magnetic Heading is now smoothly interpolated

Tacview 1.7.0 is now available!

First, I'd like to give special thanks to the French Air Force, for sponsoring some of the major improvements in this version and accepting them to be published in the public version of Tacview. That way the whole community can benefit from the idea and support of everyone!

The first major improvement in this new version is a brand-new objects database. The old code has been replaced by clean and powerful module which can smartly analyse, in real-time, objects types and names to properly display the right 3D models and properties. In other words: no more surface-to-air missiles displayed like tanks! Another important feature of this module: you can now dynamically change *any* object property, and the result will instantaneously be displayed on screen without the need of reloading the file. This further improves the real-time telemetry as well as opening new possibilities like unidentified radar contacts, airbases captures, and so on…

This new database is fully customizable. Numerous 3D models have been already added, and new objects declarations are added every day. A dedicated documentation will soon explain how to extend the new database by adding your own declarations (especially handy when you are flying real-life aircraft which are not yet declared in Tacview): http://www.tacview.net/documentation/database/

The other new feature available to the proud owners of Tacview Standard and Tacview Advanced is the new synchronized media player. You can now play up to four (4) audio/video files synchronized with the 3D view! Very handy to playback the video of in-game HUD, instruments, squadron chat and even real-time GoPro videos! Because this new media player is based on the installed Windows codecs, all your favorite video formats should be supported.

You can read the following release notes to know more about the usual numerous improvements and fixes provided by this update.

Now that the new database is working and stable, I can start working on a brand-new module. But this is a surprise. I will tell you more about it as soon as I have something working

Immagine Immagine

FEATURES & CHANGES

  • Added synchronized audio/video playback (up to four media at the same time)
  • Brand new fully customizable objects properties database
  • Added numerous new 3d models
  • Improved helicopters and propeller aircraft models
  • Integrated BMS Nordic theater version 2.1
  • Integrated BMS Pillars of Hercules theater 0.7.8.6
  • Tacview now supports GAE files with lines ending in blank characters
  • GAE object rotation is now automatically emulated when provided data is invalid
  • KML files hierarchical styles and aliases are now supported
  • The registered license key is now displayed in the “About” dialog box
  • Unknown objects will now be displayed with the generic triangle plane shape
  • Added support for transparent objects for 3d models (typically used for propellers)
  • An error message is now displayed in the debug console when a declared 3D model cannot be loaded
  • It is now possible to not display the transponder code from the labels
  • Improved VHS files merge (when Falcon does not provide all information)
  • Objects groups can now be edited directly from Tacview
  • Added support for Dynon Skyview EFIS csv files
  • Added /Authenticate command line option which returns -1 when all loaded documents are authentic

FIXES

  • Updated DCS World exporter to support DCS 1.5.8 and 2.2.0
  • Upgraded Tacview clock to improve synchronization during online debriefing or media playback
  • Tacview is now gracefully handling distorted aircraft orientation in BMS Theaters (notably Nordic and Ostsee)
  • GAE files with longitudes of exactly 0 were not properly loaded
  • Tacview is now using the date provided in GAE file name before using last file change time as a reference
  • Line number displayed in error messages was not correct with files randomly mixing CR/LF characters

Time to get your hands on the brand-new Lua SDK!

This release is a big step forward more customization: I have integrated Lua 5.3.4 in Tacview and started to develop an easy to use API. Now, anyone with some programing skills can create addons to extend existing features and even add new features to Tacview!
How to create your own addon?

  • Create a sub folder named after your addon in C:\ProgramData\Tacview\AddOns\
  • Create a file named "main.lua" in this folder (it will be automatically loaded at Tacview startup). It will look like C:\ProgramData\Tacview\AddOns\My Addon\main.lua
  • At the beginning of your script, reference the latest API like the following: local Tacview = require("Tacview172")
  • Now you can use any of the features documented in C:\Program Files (x86)\Tacview\AddOns\Tacview Lua * Interface.txt to create your own addon!
  • LuaSocket 3.0 which has been integrated in Tacview and ready to fulfill all of your connectivity needs! Just reference it as usual: socket = require("socket")

Keep in mind that this is a first iteration. While the current API is still relatively limited, new features will be added over the coming releases. Just let me know whatever you need. I will do my best to add more Lua functions, so everyone can develop the addon of your dream.

Have a look at the samples are available in C:\Program Files (x86)\Tacview\AddOns\

The most notable example is the Landing Signal Officer (currently in development) which (will) displays an LSO view when you select an aircraft carrier as switch to cockpit view. This addon will soon automatically score landing attempts.

Immagine

Time to get your hands on the brand-new Lua SDK!

A new option has been added to DCS World option page: Terrain Export.

No need any more to wait for a new release of Tacview every time a map has been updated! Simply select [Predefined Terrain] if you want to re-export a terrain which has already been integrated in Tacview, or [Unknown Terrain] if you want to export a brand-new map. Then launch a mission in the center of the map and wait patiently for the load to complete. The exporter will automatically export all the surrounding tiles in C:\ProgramData\Tacview\Data\Terrain\DCS World\

It is a long operation: It will look like DCS is frozen at the end of the mission load. This is normal, just wait for 1 to 10 minutes (depending on your system) for the terrain to be exported. As soon as you are in the mission, return to the main menu and disable the terrain export feature (to not wait 10 minutes the next time you launch a mission!).

Now, the next time you will launch Tacview, it will display the terrain tiles you have just created!

This very feature was used to integrate the Persian map in Tacview and to update the other maps with the latest version of DCS World. Some airports may not be visible, this is normal, they are not part of the terrain, they will be manually added in future updates of Tacview.

Immagine

My current plan is to continue to update Tacview 1.x and to use it as a test bed for the new features which will be available in Tacview 2.x.

Indeed, I have started to work part-time on Tacview 2, working first on all the necessary tools to develop it. The goal is to offer you an even more intuitive, fresh and modern UI, a smoother experience on low-end systems, and easier and more customization possibilities, on all platforms: Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, and Android.

That way, you will not have any excuse anymore to not review your last mission, on you cell phone, in the bus, on your way to work

FEATURES & CHANGES

  • A branch new Lua SDK is now available to create custom addons
