DCS: Mosquito FB VI - Development Progress

The final phase of DCS: Mosquito FB VI development is progressing well, this includes Damage Modelling integration. Given the Mosquito’s wooden structure; special attention is being made to the effects of different projectile types and the resulting aircraft handling changes. A more precise round impact visual system is being tested and we hope to be able to initially present this new technology for the Mossie at Early Access.

We are excited to inform you that DCS: Mosquito FB VI will support the new WWII damage model at Early Access launch. Using documentation of weapon and projectile types, we are modeling the visual impacts on the airframe and the subsequent effects to the Flight Model.

Mosquito Mini-Update

When you are ready to land your mosquito there are a small number of visual checks to carry out initially:

1. Check the air pressure, which needs to be a minimum of 200 pounds per square inch.
2. Then the supercharger switch needs to be down for MOD low gear.
3. Check that the radiator switches are open.

Following completion of those checks, we can reduce our speed to 180 miles per hour indicated air speed which is around 157 knots.

Once at 180 mph IAS we can complete the following actions:

1. Lower the undercarriage. Once down the selector handle will return to neutral and then check that the indicator shows two greens. Once lowered the nose will drop significantly so be prepared to input counter trim.
2. Make sure the propeller speed controls are fully forward
3. Check the fuel gauges to determine which tanks contain the most fuel and set the fuel cocks accordingly.

We can now start to reduce our Indicated Air Speed to 160 mile per hour at which point we will lower the flaps.
The flaps must be set to full down and once fully lowered considerable nose down trim will be required.

After lowering the flaps fully, reselect undercarriage DOWN to ensure that it is positively locked. Remember with the undercarriage and flaps lowered, the aircraft has a high rate of descent. Until used to this, pilots will tend to undershoot and correction entails the use of much more power than might be expected.

If I had a tip to offer during the landing process, it would be this….. as you flare before landing use the top of the windscreen wiper as a point of reference and line it up with the horizon. It should help avoid any bounce during landing.

To slow the aircraft down and come to a full stop following landing. Apply short multiple brake inputs this will ensure you don’t nose tip the airframe.

WWII Asset Pack - Development progress

The Sd.Kfz. 124 Wespe (German for “Wasp”) is based on the chassis of the formidable Panzer II and features a 105mm artillery gun with light armour plating capable of absorbing small arms fire. The Wespe was appreciated by axis forces for its mobility and firepower, able to keep up with the fast moving panzer formations. A fantastic addition to the DCS: WWII Asset Pack, the Wespe gives axis forces a powerful long range punch. Download the pack now to ensure you have access to the new units as soon as they are available.

Mosquito Mini-Update

Okay let’s start with the machine guns and cannons. Again as with all things Mosquito the triple pressure gauge will need to read a minimum of 200 pounds per square inch for them to function correctly. If you receive combat damage during a sortie that reduces the pneumatic pressure below that value your cannons and machine guns will potentially stop working.

Now we open the gun master switch cover and the master switch beneath needs to be set to the down position. Both your guns and cannons are now live.

Right, so we now need to activate the reflector gun sight with the switch on junction box B. If you are flying in 2D your view point will change to a more centred position.

Your cannons are fired using the fore-finger trigger and your machine guns via the thumb operated trigger. You will obviously have those bound to your HOTAS. I have my machine guns bound to the first detent on my warthog trigger and the cannons assigned to the second detent, but that’s just a personal preference.

Right let’s pull all of that together in a strafing run.

You will need to apply a little nose down trim as you run in on your target.

Now we will set up the aircraft for a bombing run. If you forget the steps you can always refer to your kneeboard as a reminder. This kneeboard will soon be available and contains the information within the Pilot’s Notes upon which our Mosquito is based.

Your bomb control and selector switches are located beneath the Perspex cover to the right on the centre console. To access them you can depress your LEFT mouse button over the release catch.

The TOP row of switches activates the release mechanism for the wing mounted bombs. Switch 1 activates the PORT or (Left) wing release and switch 2 the STARBOARD or right wing release. When both switches are down ALL wing carried ordinance will be released together.

The MIDDLE row of switches activates the release mechanism for the bay mounted bombs. Switch 3 activates the PORT or (Left) bomb release and switch 4 the STARBOARD or right bomb release. When both switches are down ALL bay mounted ordinances will be released.

The BOTTOM row of switches activates the bomb fusing mechanism for the entire ordinance carried. Switch 5 activates NOSE fusing and ALL the bombs are NOSE FUSED when the switch is in the down position. Switch 6 behaves exactly the same but for TAIL fusing.

The entire panel is MULTIPURPOSE and can be used as a Bomb, Camera, or Tanks selector. Today we are only interested in the bombs. The panel is armed when the selector is in the down position. Also note that the Perspex cover cannot be closed whilst in this position.

Of course in you intend delivering bay mounted ordinance you will have to open the bomb bay doors. To do this depress the bomb doors selector which will then return to the centre neutral position when the action is complete and the bomb doors warning light will illuminate.

To drop your bombs you need to depress the bomb release button

Now that those steps have been completed, we need to activate the reflector gun sight again with the switch on junction box B. If you are flying in 2D your view point will change to a more centred position.

Let’s see how a bombing run turns out.

Remember you are going to want to apply a little nose down trim as you run in on the targets.

Improved detail of scenes at long / very long distances.
Improved the transition to the far LOD of trees.
AIM-120 AMRAAM has received a separate INS (Inertial Navigation System) unit with datalink support. The missile seeker model has been completely revised. The radar dish now uses a realistically gyro stabilized gimbal that is controlled by the INS before target lock. An active missile seeker, like that in the AIM-120, will have its detection and tracking lock range based on physical calculations of noise and target signal ratio (which in turn depends on target RCS or ECM power and range). Target search and tracking is based on doppler velocity filtering (introduced realistic velocity gate), and the radar will search for a target near the target reference velocity provided by the INS. The guidance law was also updated. Missile seekers have received Kalman filters that estimate target motion parameters. The new guidance law accounts for target normal to LOS accelerations, possible target G-load growth rate, compensate for missile x-axis acceleration, and missile control system latency.
ME. Added indication of the Sun and Moon phases. Added a slider to quickly set the time of day. https://youtu.be/qpsPc9hInqU
ME. The Draw Tool has been added to annotate missions created in the Mission Editor. This includes lines, polygons, text, and icons. https://youtu.be/6fylCSBV5xA
CBU-87/103. Corrected distribution of bomblets depending on the burst altitude and spin RPM. Used a uniform distribution law.
CBU-87/97/103/105. FZU-39 fuse will only work when decreasing the CBU's flight altitude. This will allow the use of CBU's with a toss bombing, from a low altitude.
Fixed: H-6J launching YJ-12 and YJ-83K (thank snowywolf).
    Fixed: Wingloong launching AKD-10.
Adjusted: H-6J, JF-17 AI engine thrust.
    Updated: H-6J damage model.
EWR. GetDetectedTargets on EWR appears to have considerably shorter range than behavior suggests - corrected.
ME. Added the set of default options in the first waypoint in tasks CAP, CAS, Fighter Sweep, Intercept, Escort, SEAD, Ground Attack, Anti-ship, Pinpoint Strike, Runway attack.
ME. Added separate default options for planes and helicopters. Default options for helicopters will be added later
GUI. In the Controls panel, non-UI layer control changes are ignored if any UI layer control is changed at the same time - fixed.
AI. The plane falls under the runway when landing - fixed.
AI. Helicopters with RTB collide during landing approach - fixed.
AI. Helicopter collision when landing in parking spaces - fixed.
AI. Incorrect helicopter RTB on Bingo Fuel if runway is occupied - fixed.
ME. More meaningful Static Template loading error messages. If units will be overlapping, the offending units will be listed in the log.
SA-9. 9M31 missile, increased max lock range up to 13 km.
Electro Optics sensors. The lock range of the missile as target will depend on motor phase and overall IR signature of the missile.
ME. Added advanced waypoint option to force AIs to attack regardless of the chance of success.
Bombs will arm 2 seconds after release. This will eliminate the possibility of detonation under the aircraft in some cases.
Su-25T. Added six new instant action missions to the Mariana map.
AB250/AB500. Adjusted FM, targeting data and operation sequence.
Fighter AI. Adjusted the formation mechanism to prevent fighters from making large and abrupt maneuvers when reforming.
    ME. AH-1. Added to Jordan.
EW radar will not detect parked helicopters.
ME. Added Field Artillery tactical signs for NATO and RU coalitions.
SAMs. For short-range air defense, the target lock stage before launch has been restored. Now the air defense will work as standard in three stages: search, lock and launch.
ME. All liveries to be available to Joint task force red and blue.
MP. Clients could spawn on occupied parking - fixed.
Overcast & rain 3 seems to have no rain or rain effects in it - fixed.
F10 map Icons could disappear - fixed.
ME. GUI controls disappear when polygon line width = 1 - fixed.
ME. Add Thickness 0 for polygons without border.
AI Ka-50 flying in a crosswind is unable to shoot - fixed.
ME. MLRS in Zone Trigger causes script error - fixed.
AI F-14 crashes the game - fixed.
