Update 4.605

We just released the 4.605 update. The changelist is not as long as usual, but one of the additions is very important for all who prefer single player - Advanced Quick Mission Generator. This mode is designed for cases when you want something more advanced than a simple Quick Mission and less advanced than a full Career and gives the player instant access to customizable combat missions on Moscow, Stalingrad, Kuban and Rhineland maps. Base airfield, aircraft, time, weather, mission target, etc. can be customized, yielding a quick way to create and play a unique scenario you want (none of them will be the same thanks to variability). We're positive you'll like it.

In addition, we added another airplane to Flying Circus Vol.II Early Access program - two-seater bomber Breguet XIV.B2. It was recreated with additional detail compared to its predecessor in Rise of Flight - for instance, now it has manual fuel mixture control and a primitive flight stick load compensator. Its flight characteristics were checked and corrected. The gunner seat became more detailed.

There are many other additions as well: light tracers were made more visible by increasing their brightness keeping all their enhancements made in the previous update, various graphical effects were improved, certain AI routines important for scenario missions were improved as well.

The full 4.605 changelist follows:

1. Breguet XIV.B2 single-engine bomber is now available to all owners of Flying Circus Vol.II;
2. Advanced Quick Mission Generator added to the Quick Mission menu on Moscow, Stalingrad, Kuban and Rhineland maps with the following possible mission types:
  • a) Intercept bombers;
    b) Intercept ground attack planes;
    c) Intercept transport planes;
    d) Escort bombers;
    e) Escort ground attack planes;
    f) Column attack;
    g) Artillery position attack;
    h) Train attack;
    i) Airfield attack;
    j) Anti-shipping attack;
    k) Ground troops support;
    l) Ships support;
    m) Ships cover;
    n) Cargo delivery;
    o) Cargo paradrop;
    p) Special mission squad paradrop;
    q) Artillery position bombing strike;
    r) Railway station bombing strike;
    s) Airfield bombing strike;
    t) Supply dump bombing strike;
    u) Bridge bombing strike;

3. Thanks to our tester J2_Trupobaw, Polish localization was added to the Steel Birds campaign;
4. Projectile tracers brightness increased slightly;
5. Ricochets happen at reduced hit angles;
6. Additional improvements were made to the effects of aircraft explosions when hitting the ground;
7. New aircraft ammunition explosion effects added for aircraft of various sizes;

9. Oil splatter on windshield effect added to Nieuport 28, SPAD 7, Airco DH.IV and Fokker D.VIII;
10. SPAD VII 180hp - fixed a bug that caused the automatic helper to forcibly open the water cooler at high altitudes;
11. Airco DH.IV bomb coordinates corrected (the bombs were overlapping with holders);
12. An issue was fixed that caused the Airco DH.IV wing frame not to receive damage from bullet hits;
13. The excessive wing frame resistance to enemy fire of Fokker D.VII and Fokker D.VIIF was corrected. Nevertheless, its construction means that these aircraft are still the most durable fighters of their time;
14. The wing frame resistance to enemy fire of Halberstadt CL.II D.IIIa/D.IIIau and DH-4 was corrected (increased);
15. Firing player-controlled anti-aircraft guns creates correct lighting effects;

19. The point at which a plane appears in the parking lot of Mont St. Eloi Airfield (Arras, 0605-6) has been moved further away from the buildings to accommodate larger planes such as the new Breguet XIV.B2;
20. Fixed an issue where anti-aircraft searchlights were not targeting the player's aircraft in a Quick Mission;
21. A-20 and B-25 bombers: if the country is set to US the mission, the commander (and the assistant on B-25) now has a unique, historically more correct model. This new model includes combat-worn body armor and helmet;
22. Improved detailing of Fw 190 A3/A5/A6/A8 cockpits by Oyster_KAI;
23. Fixed an issue where AI fighters were endlessly chasing a fleeing target;
24. Fixed application crash of clients connected to the multiplayer server created from the game at the moment of the server eit to the main menu;
25. Added cloud subtype selection in Quick Mission (previously it was selected randomly);
26. Fixed an issue where only the leader of a group of landing AI planes defended against enemy planes;
27. Changed the probability of randomly selected allied and enemy squadrons in the Career mode which should increase the variability of different types of aircraft in a mission.
28. Buildings and other objects outside the mission area in Pilot Career mode are correctly removed to shorten mission loading time;
29. An error in the location database in the Battle of Moscow Pilot Career that caused 132nd BAP careers to stop working after February 27th, 1942 has been fixed.

Update 4.701

Today is a Big Day for our project and our community - update 4.701 is now available! And with it comes a new game world technology – cloud rendering based on hypertextures. This technology, in comparison with the previous one, carries a number of improvements, such as:

  • Increased variety of cloud cover;
  • A new level of scale of cloud formations;
  • Higher level (macro level) of cloud structures;
  • Greater realism of structures and forms of cloud formations;
  • Improved lighting model of clouds, and objects under and in the clouds;
  • Diverse structure of overcast clouds (including "windows" and cloudless areas);
  • Localization of precipitation under significant cloud formations and, as a consequence, localization of precipitation on the map;
  • New visualization of precipitation at a distance;
  • New rainfall lighting model;
  • Lack of repeatability of the cloud distribution map on the scale of the game map;
  • Reduced number of "compromise" solutions such as "object outlines" "mountain intersection aliasing", etc.;
  • Increased performance of the graphics subsystem.

Immagine Immagine Immagine Immagine

The mission format was changed, so third-party missions and campaigns need to be re-saved using Mission Editor or Mission Re-saver utility. Old track records can be played by deleting the .msnbin file from their folder. We have taken great care in mimicking the current cloud selection options for mission builders, so all your older missions are technically compatible with the new clouds. However, the clouds will look quite different and you may need to adjust your mission design to get the desired result. The new clouds are much larger on average than the current ones so visuals will be quite a bit different. We apologize if the new clouds inconveniences mission makers. We hope that the improvements outweigh any problems and we also hope to add some additional cloud patterns in the coming months.

Overall, we hope the new clouds will significantly increase the visual realism of our simulator, as well as bring a new greater simming and gaming experience.

Another great addition in this update is for Flying Circus – Vol. II. Included is the versatile two-seater - the German DFW C.V. It was the most common aircraft of this type on the German side from 1917 until the end of the First World War. This small aircraft is capable of carrying up to 200 kilograms of 12- and 50-kilogram bombs. Additionally, it is armed with a Spandau machine gun and a defensive Parabellum. Various modifications are provided for the installation of a camera, radio, defensive turret with a Parabellum coaxial machine gun or a Becker 20mm automatic cannon. The placement of the Benz Bz.IV engine is a peculiar one, in which the pilot has significant difficulties in looking ahead. However, this motor is quite powerful at 200hp. Quite an accomplishment in 1917.

Immagine Immagine

In addition, this update brings a long-awaited development goal - all planes are converted to 4K skins texturing. This was done in coordination with a few super dedicated community members! The last aircraft to be converted from 2K to 4K texturing in update 4.701 is the Yak-1b series 127. In addition, the Battle of Normandy development plan is moving along, and in this update, all map building objects planned for Normandy are available in the Mission Editor. Also in 4.701, all ground vehicles, which were planned for the Flying Circus – Vol. II were added to the project. Finally, there are many other changes and improvements, a complete list of which you can find below:

Mission Editor changes

65. Location of the toolbars are saved correctly, system toolbars and sections are removed;
66. It is now possible to set a block of buildings state to ‘destroyed’ by not entering all the individual IDs of the blocks, but only one ID = -1 with a damage level of 1. This should greatly save time for adding a destroyed block of buildings, reduce the size of missions created, mission loading time, and slightly increase performance.
67. Setting the value of block damage with ID = -1 between 0.1 and 0.9 will result in random destruction of the corresponding percentage of buildings in the block (the fewer buildings are in the block the more random it becomes). The random destruction of specific buildings is tied to the coordinates of the block on the map.

Update 4.702

We're glad to report that the work on 4.702 update is finished and it is released. It doesn't contain as many changes as the previous one, but it does bring the long-awaited P-51B-5 fighter for the Battle of Normandy! It took a very long time, but there were some reasons for this - namely the long list of its modifications. It has three different gunsights(!), two canopies - standard and Malcolm Hood where the moving part of the canopy is a single spherical shaped piece of plexiglass. This aircraft is also the first to have flexible bomb loadouts depending on the country (please note that for this feature to work you should select the aircraft skin of a country you want before generating a quick mission and not after that on the hangar screen). Of course, it also uses the new DVD damage visualization system and dynamic tactical codes.

Immagine Immagine

Along with P-51B, we have a late Christmas gift for the owners of Flying Circus Vol.I - two new free campaigns Gallant Green featuring the British S.E.5a and Red Knights featuring the German Albatros D.V. There are also 10 new single-player missions showcasing all the birds of Vol.I. They were created by our friend Jaegermeister. A big THANK YOU to him for creating them. Enjoy!

Jaegermeister has created 28 custom skins that can be used with the Campaigns. You can download them HERE.

As usual, there are many other improvements and additions aimed at increasing the sim quality you can see in the list below. IL-2 Sturmovik team wishes you a Happy New Year, all the best and for your dreams to be fulfilled!

Update 4.703

We have reached another milestone in the project development and are proud to present to you our newest update 4.703, which contains a lot of awesome, new stuff.

First of all, there is a new heavy fighter in the sim – the Ju 88 C-6! It was created for the Battle of Normandy module and it was designed to take out targets easily with her impressive forward firing armament. It also had the capability to carry a significant bomb load due to it being the JU 88 airframe, which made it a truly multi-purpose aircraft.

Immagine Immagine

The second and third big additions to this update is some 'heavy lumber’ from the Great War – the Handley Page O/400 and Gotha G.V for Flying Circus Vol. II.

The Handley Page was a giant capable of carrying up to 1,800 pounds of bombs, including the powerful 1,650 lb. bomb. It also has a wide selection of turret modifications for self-defense.

The Gotha is also an interesting heavy bomber that could carry up to 700 kg of bombs, but because of the very long wing and large ailerons placed on its ends this aircraft was difficult to pilot. Ailerons give a significant yaw momentum, so the pilot should be experienced and understand the physics of the process to handle it properly, especially at lower speeds.

Immagine Immagine

The third big addition in the update is a new historical campaign called 'His Majesty’s Griffons' by Alexander 'BlackSix' Timoshkov. This campaign will bring you many hours of great British warbird gameplay in a late war setting. It requires the Rhineland map from the Bodenplatte module and Spitfire XIV from Battle of Normandy Premium. If you happen to have both modules or decide to buy both, it is FREE for you!

The final big piece to this important update is the new and improved rendering technology of our Sky-dome. This new approach results in a more natural looking and varied sky with a physics-based approach to sky colors etc. There are other significant improvements that come along with it such as improved lighting, less 'banding' of the sky and realistic placement of heavenly bodies based on the location of the map. Couple this new sky with our recently improved clouds and the resulting picture becomes a lot more realistic and truer to life that rivals any combat or non-combat sim product out there.

In addition to the changes highlighted above there are many other ones listed below. And please note that due to an old bug we fixed with VR, we were required to update the track format. So, tracks recorded in previous versions of the sim won't be playable. We apologize for that as always, but it is unavoidable.

10. Improved brightness balance between the ground surface and objects textures;
11. Quick Mission time settings allow to set any time, also it is possible to quickly select the time of sunset, midnight, dawn and noon;

Career mode changes

12. A new mission type, Traffic interdiction, has been added for German squadrons that flew the Bf 109 E-7, Fw 190 A-5, Fw 190 A-8, Hs 129 B-2, Bf 110 E-2/G-2, and Ju 88 C-6;
13. The Ju 88 C-6 heavy fighter is available in the Battle of Stalingrad Career mode (III./KG 76) and in the Battle of Kuban (7.(Eis)/KG 51 and 9./KG 55);
14. Player can join II./JG 3 in the Battle of Stalingrad;
15. Player can join II./KG 76 (Battle of Moscow and Battle of Stalingrad);
16. Battle for Stalingrad 7th phase (12 Dec. 1942 - 9 Jan. 1943) targets corrected (some depots to bomb were on friendly territory);
17. Rhineland map (QM, AQM, Career, Mission Editor Templates): large railway station buildings won’t visibly ‘hang’ in the air;

Aircraft changes

18. On all Bf-109 aircraft (except for the E-7) the aerodynamic characteristics of the propeller have been changed to eliminate the unrealistic behavior of the aircraft in the wake of the propeller and the possibility of "hovering on the propeller". The airframe aerodynamics of these aircraft has also been corrected so that the maximum speed, rate of climb, turn time, and acceleration time better corresponded to the reference values;
19. On all Bf-109 aircraft (except for the E-7) the effectiveness of the ailerons at high speeds has been changed (increased) (the "clamping" of the ailerons has been reduced at speeds over 400 km/h);
20. On all Bf-109s aircraft (except for the E7 and K4) the engine thermal model was corrected to eliminate the erroneous engine overheat warning message when the limits were not exceeded;
21. On Bf-109 F4 and G-series aircraft the engine model was corrected to eliminate an error that resulted in a decrease in the boost pressure before reaching the design altitude;
22. Nieuport 28 modification of the Vickers large-caliber machine guns ("Balloon gun") was corrected (150 rounds per gun instead of 200);
23. The S.E.5a machine guns are directed upwards relative to the propeller axis;
24. Fw 190 A-6: smoke from the engine exhaust is now visible from the cockpit;
25. Flying Circus Imperial system airplanes now have technochat messages also displayed in that system;
26. Aircraft with manually controlled engine exhaust flaps now appear in the sim with the flaps fully open (except for airplanes with individually configured exhaust flap positions);
27. Aerobatics smoke generators were corrected;
28. All collimator sights with a glowing reticle that has movable elements: the brightness increase effect in the center of the optical system has been corrected;
29. Ju-88 A-4 canopy jettison looks correctly in multiplayer;
30. The ability to set an offset position of the engine control axes relative to the "common" axis in the "All Engines Selected" mode on multi-engine aircraft ("thrust difference") when the control helpers are on is possible again;
31. Flying Circus bombs' warheads were corrected;
32. Reduced posterization of the gunsight reticle halo;
33. Heavy bomber AIs won’t try to evade an attack by zig-zag maneuvering;
34. AI will correctly aim any type of forward firing weapons (such as guns and machine guns) when the ‘primary’ weapon ammunition is spent;
35. Various improvements to Ju-52, Bf-110 E-2, Ju-87 D-3 and other German aircraft cockpit textures by Oyster_KAI;
36. Landing gear position indicator light brightness corrected on all German aircraft;

Graphics changes

37. New improved fuel and engine fire effects for jet aircraft added;
38. New improved fire effects for player controllable detailed ground vehicles added;
39. Fixed posterization of the moon and stars halo;
40. Fixed an issue with Anti-Aliasing not working well enough at some angles;
41. Fixed an issue with landing lights and flares being visible through clouds;
42. Fixed an issue with a "white streak" visual artifact going down the rivers at a great distance from the camera;
43. Reduced vignetting of the "Cinematic Camera" effect;
44. Fixed an issue with an incorrect gaze direction in VR devices when switching to the gunner on aircraft where a rear gunner sits close with his back to the pilot;

Other changes

45. Sunrise and sunset times are calculated more accurately where they affect the game logic;
46. Fixed an issue that caused the radio message to repeat endlessly when an AI wingman destroyed a train;
47. Railroad platforms with M2.50 anti-aircraft guns, DSHK, Bofors L60 and Flakvierling 38 added.
