Announcing the DCS: MiG-27K Flogger-J2 - Coming to DCS from OctopusG

We are pleased to announce that OctopusG, the creators of the DCS: I-16 and DCS: La-7, are hard at work on the DCS: MiG-27K Flogger-J2. Soon, you will be able to take the controls of this legendary swing-wing Flogger in DCS as a fully flyable module.

The MiG-27K was built for one job: going in low and fast and putting ordnance on target, and OctopusG's plans for the module start with the wing. Their goal is a flight model that accurately represents the variable-sweep wing under all flight conditions, with handling that follows the wing through every sweep setting.

Step into the cockpit and you will find the PrNK-23K "Kaira" targeting and navigation system, complete with laser and TV target designation, working alongside the IPP-2-53 HUD. This powerful combination will let you employ a wide array of then state-of-the-art weaponry, from conventional bombs and guided munitions to anti-radiation missiles. And when things get up close and personal, the GSh-6-30A six-barrel 30 mm rotary cannon will be ready.

Even raising the gear is worth watching on the real aircraft. The MiG-27K's landing gear retracts with its own unique kinematics, and OctopusG aims to recreate it in DCS.

OctopusG will use photogrammetry for both the cockpit and the external model. These early work-in-progress images show the first steps on the cockpit, from the main instrument panel to the side consoles lined with switches and controls. Many of the models shown are not yet textured.

The DCS: MiG-27K is also planned to include missions on the DCS: Afghanistan Map, DCS: Iraq Map, and DCS: Syria Map. In the real world, the MiG-27D and MiG-27M flew over Afghanistan, and MiG-23 Floggers served with Iraq and Syria, but the MiG-27K will feel right at home recreating different points in the Flogger's history.

The DCS: MiG-27K is still in the early stages, and there's a lot of development ahead. We'll share more as it takes shape.

The MiG-27K Flogger-J2 - The Last and Most Capable Soviet Strike Flogger

Developed from the MiG-23 fighter as a dedicated ground-attack aircraft, it kept the swing wing, with sweep settings of 16, 45 and 72 degrees, but gained a revised nose that Soviet crews nicknamed "Utkonos," the Platypus. The first aircraft, originally designated MiG-23BM, flew in November 1972, and the MiG-27 entered frontline service with Soviet Tactical Aviation in 1975.

The MiG-27K was the most advanced version to serve with the Soviet Air Force, and roughly 200 were built. It carried no radar. Instead, its PrNK-23K navigation and attack system combined an Orbita-20-23K digital computer with the Kaira laser and TV sighting system, letting the pilot find and designate targets for guided weapons such as the laser-guided Kh-25ML and Kh-29L missiles, the TV-guided Kh-29T, and the KAB-500L and KAB-500Kr guided bombs. Against enemy radars, it could carry the Kh-27PS anti-radiation missile. Its main gun was a six-barrel 30 mm rotary cannon.

The MiG-27 saw combat in the final months of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. In October 1988, the 134th APIB, a fighter-bomber regiment flying MiG-27D and MiG-27M aircraft, deployed to Shindand Air Base and remained until the Soviet withdrawal, taking part in the siege of Kandahar.

Outside the Soviet Union, only India and Sri Lanka operated the MiG-27. India retired its last MiG-27 squadrons in December 2019.

When it arrives in DCS, the MiG-27K will give virtual pilots a dedicated Cold War strike aircraft built around laser- and TV-guided weapons, and give mission makers a swing-wing Soviet attacker to send to the front line. Strap in, sweep the wings back, and get ready to go in low.

Q3 2026 Update – Fire & Failure!

Today, we are excited to share our Q3 2026 development update, highlighting the progress made on the damage model of the MiG-17F.

Over the past few months, the team has made significant progress on the damage model, particularly in how damage affects the engine, electrical system, and hydraulic system.

Engine Surges & Fires

In a previous YouTube video, we spoke about the MiG-17F’s VK-1F engine and its susceptibility to surging at higher altitudes when high angles of attack are combined with sideslip, or following rapid throttle movements below 7,000 RPM. Such limitations were typical of many engines of its era.

We have now implemented ballistic damage to the engine, producing a range of outcomes, including surging and fire.

Immagine

Unsurprisingly, the VK-1F is a fragile engine. In reality, it can withstand only 2–3 hits from larger-caliber rounds or 5–6 hits from smaller-caliber rounds before being completely destroyed. Ballistic damage affects components such as the gearbox and can cause fires of varying severity.

  • Gearbox damage
    • Initially, a continuous stream of black smoke will develop from the gearbox and exit through the exhaust nozzle. As the engine continues running, the gross thrust generated will slowly decrease over a period of 10 minutes.

The engine will become dangerous to operate around the 7-minute mark. Survivability can be achieved by high altitude and local proximity to an airbase.
  • Major & minor fires
    • Any engine fire will cause permanent damage and a total loss of power. Once a fire starts, the outcome depends on whether the pilot can save the aircraft long enough to glide to safety or whether it is destroyed in the air.

A small fire that starts in the engine can be extinguished using the MiG-17’s emergency fire suppression system. The pilot has approximately 45–60 seconds to act before it develops into an uncontrollable engine fire that will destroy the aircraft. Initially localized, the fire can spread through leaking fuel to other areas of the airframe, including the wing roots, if left uncontained.

The MiG-17F’s internal fuel tanks are all located in the fuselage: one behind the pilot and two aft tanks around the engine’s exhaust section, just behind the turbine. Fires originating in these tanks tend to spread and are usually major fires. A major engine fire cannot be extinguished and will cause catastrophic damage, leading to an explosion within 1–2 minutes.

Electrical Failures

The MiG-17F’s electrical system draws power from the battery and/or the generator.

When the generator fails, the system switches to using battery power, and the battery begins discharging. The current draw depends on the avionics and other systems actively consuming power. As battery voltage falls below the required levels, those systems will begin to fail. Average battery life will last between 5–10 minutes.

When the battery fails, it stops supplying power to the aircraft. If the generator is still operating, the system relies entirely on its output. If both the battery and generator fail, all electrical power is lost.

Once running, the engine does not rely on battery or generator power to sustain combustion. However, if it suffers a flameout after a complete loss of electrical power, it cannot be restarted, leaving the pilot to attempt a forced landing or eject.

Hydraulic Failures

When electrical power fails, the hydraulic system also stops working. Although mechanically driven by the engine, it relies on electrical components and relays to maintain the correct pressures. This brings nominal hydraulic pressure from 140 kg/cm2 to zero within 3–7 minutes. The hydraulic system powers the landing gear, the flaps, and the aileron boost system.

Without aileron boost, the pilot should keep airspeed below 500 km/h to maintain aileron control and be prepared to use the emergency pneumatic landing gear and flap deployment systems for landing. Here is a YouTube video for demonstration.

DCS: MiG-23M Flogger Coming to DCS from Ugra Media

Following last week's announcement of the DCS: MiG-27K, the Flogger family in DCS is growing. We're excited to announce that Ugra Media, the team behind the DCS: Normandy 2.0, DCS: Syria, and DCS: Cold War Germany maps, is developing the DCS: MiG-23M Flogger. This is Ugra Media's first aircraft module, and taking on an aircraft as iconic as the MiG-23 is no small step. Before work could begin, the team had to meet the standards we set for every full-fidelity DCS module, and they have.

Ugra Media's goal is to recreate not just how the MiG-23M looks and flies, but how every system on board works, including its real-world limitations, operating modes, and failures. To get there, the team is working from original technical documentation, pilots' manuals, electrical and hydraulic schematics, factory drawings, and archival photographs and video.

The flight model is planned to be built on real aerodynamic data, capturing how the aircraft's handling changes across the 16, 45, and 72-degree wing sweep settings, the effect of the slats and flaps, its behaviour at high angles of attack, and how external stores and fuel burn shift its balance.

In the cockpit, every switch, circuit breaker, and warning light has its own logic, wired to the system it controls. Behind the panels, Ugra Media aims to simulate the AC and DC electrical systems, two independent hydraulic systems driving the landing gear, wing sweep, high-lift devices, and flight controls, and a fuel system with automatic burn sequencing, drop tanks, and emergency fuel dump. The R-29-300 engine is planned to model everything from startup and afterburner to temperature limits, surges, and in-flight restarts, with the SAU-23A autopilot to help with workload.

For the fight itself, the plan includes the Sapfir-23D radar, an identification system, and the aircraft's weapons computer, along with the full MiG-23M armament suite: the GSh-23L 23 mm cannon, R-23R semi-active radar and R-23T infrared missiles, R-60 short-range missiles (while these missiles are already in game, Eagle Dynamics will transition these to the new component-based model), unguided rockets, and bombs. Weapon preparation, launch limitations, and firing modes are planned to work together with the radar and sighting system, just as they did on the real aircraft.

When things go wrong, they're meant to go wrong properly. Failures are planned for the engine, hydraulics, electrical power, fuel system, radar, navigation equipment, weapons, wing sweep mechanism, landing gear, and brakes, with damage affecting each system the way it would on the real Flogger.

We'll share more as development of the DCS: MiG-23M continues.

The MiG-23M Flogger - The Definitive Early Flogger

By the early 1960s, the MiG-21 was fast and agile, but its radar, range, and weapons load were holding it back. Its replacement needed a better radar, more fuel, and beyond-visual-range missiles, while also taking off and landing in a much shorter distance. Mikoyan's answer was a swing wing, and the first variable-sweep prototype took to the air in 1967.

The early production Floggers had a difficult start, but in June 1972 the MiG-23M flew for the first time, and the aircraft came of age. It was the definitive first-generation variant and became the Soviet Air Force's main air superiority fighter. Its Sapfir-23D radar gave it true look-down/shoot-down capability, making the MiG-23 the first Soviet fighter to field it, and a TP-23 infrared search-and-track sensor sat beneath the nose. It could carry a pair of R-23 missiles, in semi-active radar or infrared versions, along with R-60 short-range missiles and its GSh-23L cannon. Power came from the R-29-300, rated at 122.5 kN with afterburner.

The pilot set the wing by hand. Fully spread at 16 degrees, it was used for takeoff, landing, and slower cruise. At 45 degrees, it was set for fighter manoeuvring and low-altitude intercepts, and fully swept at 72 degrees, it was reserved for high-altitude intercepts and high-speed dashes at low level.

Production began at the Znamya Truda factory in 1972, and by 1974 it was turning out more than thirty airframes a month. The first MiG-23Ms entered service in 1973, soon followed by frontline regiments stationed in East Germany. The Soviet Air Force and Air Defence Forces built around 1,300 between 1972 and 1978, while the export MiG-23MF, nearly identical to the version sold to Warsaw Pact allies, served across Eastern Europe. India also flew the MiG-23MF from 1981, and its R-23 missiles made it the first Indian Air Force aircraft armed with beyond-visual-range missiles.

The MiG-23M paved the way for the lighter MiG-23ML and the ultimate MiG-23MLD, and with more than 5,000 built across all versions, the MiG-23 became the most-produced variable-sweep wing aircraft in history.

When it arrives in DCS, the MiG-23M will put virtual pilots in the cockpit of a Cold War interceptor built around speed, radar, and missiles, and it comes from a team that knows the ground it once defended, having built the DCS: Cold War Germany map. Sweep the wings back and get ready to go fast.

IronMike - 3rd Party Developers ha scritto:
Viggen's fuel system

We are proud to introduce a new and more in depth simulation of the Viggen's fuel system with this patch. Failures and warnings now have meaning and correspond to actual events, pumps, tanks and fuel lines are simulated and much more! For an in depth overview, please take a look at the more detailed changelog below. We hope you enjoy this patch and as always would like to kindly ask you for your feedback. Thank you!

The below (and more) can also be found in the updated manual, starting page 68. The manual also includes detailed electric, hydraulic and fuel schematics.

  • AJS-37 Viggen Fuel system simulation:
    • Fuel system-related warnings now have meaning.
    • LT-KRAN light: One or both low-pressure valves are closed. (LT-KRAN EBK now also works.)
    • TANKPUMP: Low pressure after the fuel boost pumps. The switch is now also functional.
    • X-TANK BRÄ: There is >3% fuel in the tank, and the pressure is too low to transport fuel to the collector tank. The fuel indicator will also stop showing the fuel content of the external tank.
    • BRÄ < 24: Lights up when the fuel in the fore compartment of the collector drops below a certain level. If the total fuel amount is also below 24%, the warning will remain until refueling is started. The fuel indicator will also show only the contents of the collector tank.
    • BRÄ UPPF:
      • Low pressure after the fuel distributor while it is in "high speed" mode. "Low speed" mode is forced for the remainder of the flight.
      • High pressure in the collector tank. "Low speed" mode is forced for the remainder of the flight.
      • Low pressure in the collector tank and the gear is "out".
      • Low pressure in hydraulic system 1; the distributor stops.
    • The X-tank will be emptied first, assuming sufficient pressure in the tank. If the fuel flow is not sufficient (25000 l/h), fuel will also be drawn from the internal feed tanks when the fuel level drops sufficiently in the collector tank and the valves open.
    • The fuel distributor will stop when pitch is >60, pitch is <-30, or roll to the right is >15 degrees. Note: the fuel supply rate is heavily affected; watch A/B usage.
  • Fuel indicator:
    • KONTROLL test:
      • The indicator now correctly shows the collector tank's level, minus about 4 percent.
      • The "tie" (needed fuel) now correctly moves to the fuel indicator's position if CK is working correctly.
    • The fuel indicator will display the fuel level with some amount of error; the magnitude is dependent on attitude.
    • With full internal tanks, the indicator shows about 107%. If the X-tank is present and full, it shows about 133%.
  • NOTES:
    • During refueling, "TANK PUMP" and "BRÄ UPPF" will be lit and should go out when refueling is complete.
    • During prolonged afterburner use (Z3 mainly), the feed tanks are NOT able to supply enough fuel, and the collector tank's fuel level will drop and trigger the BRÄ < 24 warning. If/when the fuel level rises again, the warning will go away.
    • G-loadings < 1G may result in the feed tanks not supplying fuel to the collector tank, or fuel in the collector tank not flowing to the boost pumps in its rear section, thus starving the engine of fuel.
