What does that mean? Well it means that we already have pushed more modifications than between 4.36.3 and 4.37.0! Some would argue that we should have named it as a major release but 4.38 is already booked for our new terrain release and we count on it… . From an asset perspective, not much will change visually but there are major braking changes…
  • U3 - What to expect
    • The BML format
      This is a major breaking change that will need for creators to convert LOD 3DDB to the new BML format… . Internally, @Seifer and others worked hard to implement it in the current 4.37 branch and solved numerous bugs that were discovered during testing… . What will you gain? Well, this is a v1 of BML format that doesn’t support PBR but will help push the boundaries of higher triangles models and optimization of draw calls. You can expect better performance on more recent hardware but it is not possible to quantify it right now… .
    • ARH Logic (Active Radar Homing)
      I don’t count the debates around this but we hope coming to an end on this with something we believe plausible… . Maybe we won’t find anymore 150 pages threads around this 🙂
    • Campaign logic
      Well… This is not a surprise anymore, there have been posts by our new campaign expert that worked on make the engine planning missions better and manage a new acceptable level of risk (ALR) that people will be able to tune in the mission XML files. Other stuff for the campaign and fixes will come but I don’t want to spoil too much
    • The F-15 and other planes
      [Obviously there are a lot of new features for the F-15C coming up in U3 that will add more systems and will make it more usable but don’t consider it fully “ramp startable” yet… . Nevertheless, this opened the door for other planes and some will see basic level of implementation in this future update…
    • More fixes and MP stability
      Let’s state that the level of stability has reached levels never known before in Falcon history and we aim to continue that! Our goal is still to host a TvT after the summer once U3 is released and considered stable by the community… .
  • 4.38 - What’s next?
    • This is a question we’re not able to answer right now but what I can tell is that we progressed further thanks to decideted people in the team that still continue to update objectives and maps for our new terrain engine. Obviously, the attention will shift to it after U3 is shipped. The first aim of U3 is to test the BML format and make sure we have this part correctly implmented before we shift the terrain engine… . Thus, I cannot give date for 4.38 becase the road is still long to a complete state. the finish line isn’t too far but it will be still some work before we are satisfied with a “releasable” version of it… .     Limitations with alpha sorting (you might see transparency issues in cloud, fog, trees, lights, …)
    F-15C: The HUD SYM switch is still tied to the drift CO callback. The clicks work fine, but the callback for the switch is wrong
    Due to format changes, the avionics configurator will not work anymore… Need to do it manually in *.txtpb format files
    For TE created before 4.37.4.0, please copy the “Te_New.l16.txtpb” to “My_mission_name.l16.txtpb”

  • Important Notes
    Graphics Options Major Changes:
    • The values in the config variables are integers and represent multipliers of 1024 (So 1 means 1024, 2 means 2048, 4 means 4K, 8 8K etc etc).
      The values are “limiters”, but they cannot set a texture size. So e.g the default value of all the config variables is actually 32. Which means 32K (DDS max values is 16K anyway, but 32 is a safety value for the future) and basically says: No texture size is limited – That is the default behavior. So if you aren’t specifying any of the config variables in your config file, the behavior is same as it was so far (Without using the script)
      The following 2 config variables don’t exist anymore and will have no effect (As now the same functionality can be achieved by the new config variables):
      • g_bNewTerrainPhotorealForce4KTiles
        g_bNewTerrainProceduralUse1024Textures


      The config variables and their meaning:
      g_nTerrainPhotorealMaxTexRes – The max size of the terrain textures. The options are:
      • 16 – If you have the 16K tiles, the highest res will be used.
        8 – If you have the 16K tiles, they will be used but with at a lower res, You can think of this as an intermediate option
        4 – If you have the 16K tiles but want them disabled. If the 16K tiles don’t exist then 4 is the only option and will be used no matter what you set here.


      g_nTerrainProceduralsMaxTexRes – Resolution of the procedural terrain textures. The default is 2 (So 2K), you can use 1 if you want a lower res (And a little better performing) procedural texturing.
      g_nCockpitMaxTexRes – Not really “cockpit” textures only, but basically every LOD that has only a single LOD in folder will be affected here. Valid values are 8, 4, 2, 1. You should know that 2K is already too low for the new cockpits, I suggest to not go lower than 4K.
      g_nModelsMaxTexRes – All 3D models that aren’t cockpits – Valid values are again 8, 4, 2, 1.
      g_sTexturesLODPreset – For easier use if someone would like to setup everything at once, this option can be used. Every value of this variable except the default “Custom” will override all the above variables. The options and their meaning are:
      • “High” – Same as the default, everything is highest setting.
        “Medium” – Terrain 8K, Procedurals 1K, Cockpit 4K, models 4K
        “Low” – Terrain 4K, Procedurals 1K, Cockpit 4K, models 2K
        “Custom” (Default value) – Everything will be decided by each variable.


      Note1: Converted textures will now be reverted before update
      Note2: 16k textures are now spiltted into 8k tiles automatically when entering campaign or TE. You can also download 16k tiles (v2) from torrent.


    AI egagement logic improvement:
    • Shoot Shoot code and Missile distance engagement:
      Missile Fire is now probabilistic between min and max values that are depending in the BVR profile chosen (offensive or defensive) and depending on then number of missiel LEft.
      In defensive, expect AI to fire at longer distance than in offensive.
      With few missile left, AI will try to fire close to Rne.


    BVR tactics upgrade:
    • AI are now able to execute skate manoeuvers correctly.
      Some BVR tactics have been debugged as some of them were ending in deadlock or infinite pure pursuit
      AI are now able to abort a chase , particularly when entering into hostile territory. AI should abort after a few minutes or pursuit in Hostile territory if Target has remained cold during the pursuit.
