DCS: AH-64D Mini-Updates

In today's Open Beta update, a few additional control options were added that were not listed in the changelog. As we continue to improve the behavior of the TADS, specifically when using Linear Motion Compensation (LMC), we've added a few additional input commands and an additional option under the Special tab.

Four new input commands have been added to the TEDAC right handgrip category to allow the Manual Track (MAN TRK) controller to be moved diagonally to adjust the pitch and yaw of the TADS turret with a single input. For players that are using an 8-way hat switch to control the TADS slew inputs, these four additional commands will allow you use all 8 direction positions of the switch.

In addition to the new commands above, a slider has been added to the AH-64D options under the Special tab for those users using 4-way or 8-way hat switches to control the TADS slew. When applying a slew input using a hat switch, the MAN TRK controller on the right handgrip will increase in magnitude as the input is held, allowing a short tap to make a small magnitude slew input, and a continuous press to make a large magnitude slew input. By adjusting this slider, you can control the rate that the MAN TRK input magnitude increases, or "ramps up", to further fine-tune your input device as you prefer.

AH-64D Development Report

The most recent update to the DCS: AH-64D module includes the addition of the AGM-114L radar-guided Hellfire missile and Laser Spot Tracker (LST), as well as the option for the auxiliary fuel tank. The update also fixes several issues related to Multi-Crew and the rotor lighting effect artifacts at night have also been fixed. The VHF AM radio can now only receive in the 108 - 115.975 MHz range, and missile constraints box and rocket steering cursor are now displayed when SAFE. Additionally, the George AI now uses weapons correctly and there is no "Back Scatter" message when there are no missiles. Overall, the update has made improvements to the DCS: AH-64D module's functionality. Please check out Matt Wagner’s recent video on the AGM-114L Radar Guided Hellfire and to search for, acquire, and track a laser designation, make sure to watch the Laser Spot Tracking tutorial.

F-16C Viper Development Progress

We are pleased to update you on the 3D pilot model for DCS: F-16C Viper. We hope it will improve immersion nicely.

The new pilot model for the Viper is being worked on and will provide more realism and immersion when flying the DCS: F-16C Viper. In the above screenshot you may see an entirely new and highly detailed model. We patiently and kindly await your feedback.

Radar Development Report

We would like to update you on the improvements coming soon to the F-16C and F/A-18C radars, notably realistic target detection and tracking in various operation modes. Phase 1 of this update incorporates more detailed and realistic modeling of the radar waveform that better accounts for reasonable detection range ratios between HPRF and MPRF modes. The model also has an adjustable speedgate option to select the width of the main-beam clutter notch filter, helping to reject or show unwanted targets. Please, note that this will be the initial release of the new radar model, and development will continue in future phases.

Phase 1 of our new radar model for the F-16C and F/A-18C provides more realistic radar target detection and tracking in different modes of operation. It incorporates many new features like signal-to-noise ratio calculations that determine a target’s detection range, signal-to-clutter ratio, and receiver dynamic range calculations. The latter may limit detection of small targets in the presence of strong ground clutter. The new modeling also better accounts for the unique aspects of different waveforms.

For example: Velocity Search (VS) and Range While Search (RWS) both include High Pulse Repetition Frequency (HPRF) waveforms; however, RWS provides range measurement because it uses Frequency Modulation (FM) ranging, that also results in a loss of sensitivity. Our model accounts for such losses, and detection range depends on the type of FM-waveform. Also, HPRF modes can only detect closing targets; detection of low aspect targets are generally limited by strong side-lobe clutter. The Medium Pulse Repetition Frequency (MPRF) mode has eight distinct waveforms. Whereas the use of so many waveforms cause a proportional reduction in the signal-to-noise ratio (thus a reduction in detection range relative to HPRF), it does provide all-aspect target detection aside from beaming targets that may be obscured by main lobe clutter. Phase 1 of our new model accounts for these effects, and faithfully models the detection range ratio between HPRF and MPRF modes.

Another new feature is an adjustable speed gate option. This provides the ability to select the width of the main-beam clutter notch filter that adjusts the threshold of minimal radial velocity that can be detected. This may assist in filtering unwanted, slow targets.

Upon Phase 1 release and tuning, we will implement Phase 2 that will include the effect of radar azimuth and bar settings on detection ranges and the inclusion of more accurate look down radar performance.

Radar White Paper

The F-16C and F/A-18C radars are undergoing significant refactoring to provide a more accurate and realistic accounting of their detection capabilities. This includes a wide array of real-world factors that were previously unaccounted for. This first Radar White Paper discusses our modeling logic of the F/A-18C radar. A later Radar White Paper will discuss the F-16C radar and how we calculate its detection capabilities. Please read the in depth Radar White Paper.

F/A-18C Development Progress

We are pleased to share our progress on the new F/A-18C pilot helmet and oxygen mask models which offer a much higher level of detail and fidelity.

The development of the helmet and facemask models for the F/A-18C Hornet is nearing completion. The updated helmet is a new 3D model that also includes options for JHMCS, sun visor, and night vision goggles. The oxygen facemask has also been updated to be more representative of our 2005 F/A-18C Lot 20. Aspects of this will also benefit other pilot models, like the new upcoming F-16C pilot model.

GFM Development Progress

We have made good progress on the General Flight Model (GFM), which is currently being tested using the DCS: MiG-29 as the test bed. Based on results, we will be including GFM in more aircraft.

Following the completion of tight formation GFM implementation our current GFM task is development of algorithms loose formation behavior. Due to the large turn radius for loose formation modes, wingmen must follow their own independent trajectories in order to position correctly on the leader. New algorithms are being developed to take both kinematic trajectories and pilot/aircraft visibility conditions into account, similar to what real pilots must to keep their lead aircraft always in sight.

Stab and trim position during speed changes

Immagine

The above graph is a recording of the stab trim position during acceleration and deceleration. As increased power creates a nose-up pitching moment, the stab trim positions are not the same for acceleration at max AB and deceleration at idle, especially at low speeds and requires more nose-down input. Mach-related changes are noticeable near Mach 1. We are really excited with the progress being made and are confident that the wingman GFM and general AI aircraft GFM will be unique in any simulation worldwide. Please follow the news for more information as we continue to enhance this highly complex general flight model.

Multiplayer Development Progress

We are happy to announce that we are working on some important improvements to the multiplayer interface. The first step involves adding numerous filters and a search field to the "Select role" server screen. The second phase will include being able to select spawn locations directly from the map. These enhancements are based on your feedback and from multiplayer server owners, closed beta testers and content creators.

The new filters will allow you to much more efficiently navigate the select role screen, which often contains dozens of aircraft slots on sophisticated multiplayer missions. The filters can be added one by one to narrow the list of available slots you may be interested in. They include airfields or starting points for the slot, aircraft type and specific seat/role in the cockpit.

In addition, a special group of filters will be available to filter slots to only those modules you have installed. Another filter for which airfield coalition is currently the same as the slot, in case of the airfield being captured by another coalition. Moreover, hot start, cold start and air start slots filters. A free search field will allow search for any specific string; you can search for a username to see which slot is occupied by this user. As a second step, we plan to improve the interface after joining the server with additional interaction right on the map. Please follow the news for more details coming soon.
