Il Brasile esclude l'Eurofighter dalla gara caccia

Super Hornet, Rafale o Gripen NG. Sarà  uno di questi tre caccia a sostituire i Mirage 2000, gli F-5M e gli AMX A-1M della Forca Aerea Brasiliana. Il grande sconfitto è l'Eurofighter Typhoon, scartato insieme al Lockheed Martin F-16ADV e al Sukhoi SU-35. Una sconfitta tanto più bruciante in quanto inattesa. Secondo fonti industriali il Brasile non avrebbe al momento motivato l'esclusione del Typhoon.

Il comunicato ufficiale spiega che la valutazione finale - e a maggior ragione quella preliminare, osserva Dedalonews - comprende aspetti operativi (a partire da una vita utile non inferiore a 30 anni), logistici, tecnici, compensazioni industriali (comprese partnership strategiche di lungo periodo) e trasferimenti di tecnologia che possano mettere l'industria brasiliana in grado di partecipare alla produzione di un caccia di quinta generazione.

In assenza di dettagli circa le varie proposte, è difficile individuare quali di questi fattori possa aver pesato nella decisione. Sotto il profilo tecnico-operativo nel ruolo caccia l'Eurofighter è infatti superiore agli altri concorrenti ma Super Hornet e Rafale sono più adatti per l'attacco al suolo. Un ruolo determinante potrebbe essere stato giocato dal prezzo, anche se le fonti industriali sostengono che il costo sul ciclo di vita sarebbe stato sostanzialmente simile. Eurofighter - secondo quanto risulta a Dedalonews - avrebbe discusso persino la possibilità  di fornire Typhoon usati del primo lotto.

Il Brasile ha lanciato il 15 maggio 2008 il progetto F-X2 per sostituire le attuali tre linee caccia da difesa aerea e attacco con una sola linea multiruolo. L'esigenza è urgente, anche per i timori creati dalla recente scelta del SU-30 da parte del Venezuela di Hugo Chavez, ed il mercato ricco: 36 macchine nel primo lotto che dovrebbe essere aggiudicato entro fine anno e consegnato a partire dal 2014, fino a 120 nell'intero programma. Eurofighter aveva annunciato in luglio di aver risposto alla richiesta di informazioni brasiliana pubblicata in luglio. La gara era seguita per conto del consorzio da Alenia Aeronautica, alla quale il programma italo-brasiliano AMX sembrava conferire la miglior conoscenza del mercato e del cliente.

Saab wins Brazil's F-X2 fighter contest with Gripen NG

Brazil has selected the Saab Gripen E/F for the 36 aircraft F-X2 requirement to replace its air force's older combat types. With an acquisition cost in the region of $4.5 billion, the Gripens will replace the Dassault Mirage 2000C fighters operated by the 1st Air Defence Group and a number of the modernised Northrop F-5EMs in four other Air Force squadrons.

The long-awaited announcement was made on 18 December by Brazilian defence minister Celso Amorim and Brazilian air force Chief Gen Juniti Saito. The decision was driven by aircraft performance, transfer of technology and low through-life costs, according to the officials. Contract negotiation is expected to last between 10 and 12 months.

Saab has guaranteed the total transfer of technology of “all systems” including the weapons command software, which will allow future integration of Brazilian-developed missiles and weapons. Deliveries are expected to start 48 months from contract signing and will eventually reach the rate of 12 aircraft per year.

Existing Gripen C/Ds operated by the Royal Swedish Air Force can also be supplied to Brazil in order to replace recently-retired Mirage 2000C/Ds. The older Swedish aircraft will be eventually replaced by the new Gripen E/F models. Amorim says “besides this contract we are also currently open to setting up other partnerships, especially regarding fifth-generation fighters”.

Amorim adds Brazil has a strong relationship with the US and is not concerned about limitations to US-sourced components. Commenting about the Gripen NG, general Saito says “the intellectual property of this new fighter will be ours”. Saab had earlier promised to develop a $150 million aerostructures assembly plant in the city of São Bernardo do Campo in the State of São Paulo.

For four years since publication of a short-list, the F-X2 fighter replacement program has pitted Gripen against Dassault's Rafale and the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. Most recently, media reports about a visit by French President Francois Hollande to Brazil stoked speculation about the Rafale’s possible selection.

Dassault, which has been working towards a new deal in Brazil for the past 15 years, has expressed its disappointment with the selection of the Swedish fighter. "The Gripen is a lighter, single engine aircraft that does not match the Rafale in terms of performance and therefore does not carry the same price tag," it says. "This financial rationale fails to take into account either the Rafale’s cost-effectiveness or the level of technology offered."

Saab, Brazil finalise Gripen NG deal

Saab and industrial partners including Embraer are to start work on 36 Gripen NG fighters formally ordered by Brazil with the signing on 27 October of a SKr39.3 billion ($5.8 billion) contract for delivery over five years, starting in 2019.

The deal – under negotiation since December 2013, when Brazil selected the Gripen over Dassault's Rafale and the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet for its F-X2 requirement – is for 28 single-seat and eight two-seat aircraft, and makes Brazil the export launch customer for the NG model.

About 15 of the aircraft will be assembled in Brazil and the rest in Sweden, although 150 Brazilian engineers and a number of technicians will soon be arriving in Sweden for training and to participate in the assembly of some of the aircraft.

Lennart Sindahl, who heads Saab’s aeronautics business, says the single-seaters will be similar to the E-model Gripens under development for the Swedish air force. As part of a technology transfer plan, the two-seaters will include some Brazil-specific design features and will be developed with the help of the engineers being dispatched to Sweden.

The two-seaters will therefore, adds Sindahl, be delivered later in the five-year delivery cycle.

The Gripens will replace Dassault Mirage 2000C fighters operated by Brazil’s 1st Air Defence Group and a number of modernised Northrop F-5EMs in four other air force squadrons.

Co-design with Saab of some aspects of the two-seaters will open a new phase of development of Brazil’s – particularly Embraer’s – military aircraft capabilities. Sindahl, speaking by telephone after the contract signing, did not detail whether or not Brazilian final assembly work would include some or all of the two-seaters. However, in July Embraer chief executive Frederico Curado said Brazil’s assembly point would be Embraer’s military factory and flight test centre in Gavião Peixoto.

Citing commercial confidentiality, Sindahl declines to remark on the apparent increase to about $5.8 billion in the price of a contract that was announced as some $4.5 billion when the Gripen was selected. However, he did underscore Saab’s reputation for “efficiency”.

IL BRASILE ACQUISIRÀ 108 SAAB GRIPEN

La Forza Aerea Brasiliana (Força Aérea Brasileira: FAB) prevede di acquistare complessivamente almeno 108 cacciabombardieri Saab Gripen E/F. Lo ha riferito il 18 novembre alla IQPC Fighter Conference di Londra una fonte ufficiale che ha chiesto l’anonimato, spiegando che l’acquisizione dei velivoli svedesi avverrà in tre tranches distinte di cui la prima è rappresentata dal recente ordine per 36 velivoli (valore 5,4 miliardi di dollari) con cui rimpiazzare i Dassault Mirage 2000C già ritirati dal servizio. Altre due tranches del velivolo svedese verranno commissionate nei prossimi anni per rimpiazzare i 57 cacciabombardieri leggeri F-5EM/FM e i 52 AMX ancora in servizio la cui radiazione è prevista entro il 2035.

Brazil signs weapons deal for Gripen NG fleet

Brazil has further advanced its acquisition programme for the Saab Gripen NG, by signing a roughly $245 million contract for the type’s weapons. Announced on 24 April, the deal is between the company and the Brazilian defence ministry’s aeronautics command.

Saab declines to detail the individual weapon systems included in the package, but says all export authorisations should be received during the second half of this year.

“The acquisition contract includes weapon deliveries by Saab and suppliers which have been selected by the customer,” it adds.

Brazil last October confirmed its programme to acquire 36 Gripen NGs, following a selection decision made in December 2013. A final agreement covering the financial aspects of the main procurement should be concluded soon, according to Saab.

“We expect that the agreement with the Brazilian government comes into effect during the second quarter, and the total order value will amount to SKr39.3 billion [$4.6 billion],” chief executive Håkan Buskhe said in a first quarter earnings statement also released on 24 April.

Saab and Embraer earlier this month finalised their joint programme management and production arrangements for the Brazilian air force’s first batch of Gripens. The service will receive 28 single-seat NG-model examples and eight two-seat examples from 2019 under the initial acquisition, but could eventually order further examples to take this total above 100 aircraft.

Battesimo dell’aria per il primo Gripen E dell’Aeronautica Brasiliana

Ieri Saab ha effettuato con successo il primo volo del primo esemplare del caccia Gripen E destinato all’Aeronautica Brasiliana. Il Gripen E designato 39-6001 è decollato dall’aeroporto di Saab a Linköping, in Svezia, per il battesimo dell’aria ai comandi del pilota collaudatore Richard Ljungberg.

La durata del volo è stata di 65 minuti e ha incluso test di manovrabilità e qualità del volo a diverse altitudini e velocità. L’obiettivo principale era verificare che il comportamento dell’aeromobile fosse in linea con le aspettative.

“Questa è una pietra miliare per la grande cooperazione tra Svezia e Brasile. Meno di cinque anni dopo la firma del contratto, il primo Gripen brasiliano ha effettuato preso il suo primo volo “, ha dichiarato Håkan Buskhe, Presidente e CEO di Saab.

Questo è il primo Gripen brasiliano prodotto ( su 28 JAS 39E e 8 JAS 39F ordinati) e verrà utilizzato come velivolo di prova nel programma di test di volo. La differenza principale rispetto ai precedenti velivoli di prova è che il 39-6001 presenta un cockpit di layout completamente nuovo con display wide screen denominato Wide Area Display (WAD), due piccoli display Head Down (sHDD) e un nuovo Head Up Display (HUD). Un’altra differenza importante è un moderno sistema di controllo di volo (FCS) e modifiche all’hardware e al software.

“E’ stato un grande onore pilotare il primo Gripen E brasiliano perché so quanto questo significhi per l’Aeronautica brasiliana, per Saab e i nostri partner brasiliani. Il volo è andato liscio e l’aereo si è comportato esattamente come avevamo previsto sui banchi prova e sui simulatori. Questa è stata anche la prima volta che abbiamo pilotato il Wide Area Display nella cabina di pilotaggio e sono felice di dire che le mie aspettative sono state soddisfatte “, ha detto il pilota collaudatore di Saab, Richard Ljungberg.

L’aeromobile 39-6001 si unirà al programma di test per l’espansione dell’inviluppo di volo, del sistema tattico e dei sensori. Nell’aeronautica brasiliana, il velivolo sarà designato F-39 e avrà il numero di registrazione FAB 4100.
