DCS: Viper Mini-Updates

With the earlier release of the DTOS mode, I got quite a few "Christ-on-a-bike, Wags, where the max toss anticipation cue?" Well, it's now in the game and should be released in the next big Viper update based on final testing results.

The maximum toss (45 degree) anticipation cue consists of a circle, 100 mR in diameter, displayed on the HUD (below the boresight cross at 0 degrees azimuth and -3 degrees elevation). The cue is displayed 2 seconds prior to a maximum toss pull-up (based on 4.0g in 2 seconds). When the solution cue is displayed, the anticipation cue flashes for 2 seconds before being removed from display. Weapon release occurs as the aircraft approaches a 45-degree pitch. Because there are multiple release points that can result in weapon release, release can occur any time after the solution cue is displayed. For less than a 45-degree toss, the pitch at release varies depending on the maneuver performed.

FLIR - Development Progress

Our new FLIR technology is progressing well. It takes into account how various terrain elements are rendered in the IR spectrum. This includes large masses of water, vegetation, asphalt and concrete that have high thermal retention capacities. These gradually heat up and cool down at different rates depending on the color and material. This leads to bodies of water and forests looking cooler during the day and at night time seeming warmer.

Houses, buildings, runways and many other man-made structures often look warmer at night as they have absorbed heat during the day and are clearly visible in the IR spectrum. In addition to the dynamic nature of all vehicles and changing heat signatures, which are dependent on their movement, we will continue to tune the terrains, associated map objects and vehicles to bring you these enhancements in time for the DCS: AH-64D Early Access launch. We are confident that the new FLIR technology will be available across all compatible sensors deployed in DCS.

S-3B Viking - Development Progress

The S-3B Viking is a carrier-based, subsonic, all-weather, long-range, multi-mission aircraft that carries automated weapon systems. It is also capable of extended missions with aerial refueling. The Viking was originally used by the U.S Navy for anti-submarine warfare, but it has also provided electronic warfare and surface surveillance for large battle groups.

The S-3B variant features upgraded avionics: the AN/APS-137 inverse synthetic aperture radar, Joint Tactical Information Distribution System, and AGM-84 Harpoon launch capabilities. The aircraft has two underwing hardpoints for fuel tanks, cluster bombs, missiles, rockets, and storage pods. It also has four internal bomb bay stations that can be used to carry general-purpose bombs and special stores.

We hope that this progress report was to your satisfaction and we patiently await your feedback.

DCS: AH-64D Mini-Updates - Closed Beta Testing Has Begun

DCS: AH-64D has entered Closed Beta Testing, and this is a significant milestone. Our Closed Beta Test team consists of many community members that assist us in testing new modules near the tail-end of development as an addition quality control step. This has proved valuable for us to help identify bugs in highly complex modules that requires many eyes to ensure thorough testing.

We sincerely thank all our Closed Beta Testers for their time and hard work. Testing is not always fun; it can be tireless work.

A critical aspect of the Closed Beta Test effort is network play. This has historically been an area more difficult to test internally because of the requirement for many players online. Yesterday, the Closed Beta Test team conducted their first large-scale network test with excellent results. We hope you enjoy the attached images.

We understand that you are eager for the release, and we are working at full speed to make this happen. We are still on track for an Early Access release before the end of March 2022. Thank you for your patience and support; it will be worth it.

DCS: Viper Mini-Updates

Today we completed internal integration of L16 and IDM sharing of HTS/HAD emitter contacts. This will allow you to designate and share emitter location between Flight, Team, and Donors. Additionally, sharing of emitter triangulation data between flight members is also internally complete as part of the TDOA option from the HAD page.

We've made further adjustments to SPI sharing regarding accurate HSD symbology that includes Flight/Team member ID.

Finally, we've made good progress on adjustments to the ITR and G-onset, and internal verification tests will probably start next week.

If testing goes well, we plan to have it included in the next Viper update.

Progress on datalink is going well, but we still have some significant items to still complete.

Yak-52 Flight Dynamics

As a result of the Flight Model enhancements, the aircraft will have more realistic take-off behaviour and better performance in inverted aerobatic manoeuvres. We understand that some of you have been waiting for these improvements a while and we thank you for your patience. Going forward we will address other tasks that need to be completed before moving DCS: Yak-52 out of Early Access. We very much look forward to your feedback in the next Open Beta update.

AH-64D Flares Development Progress

We are pleased to share our progress on the M206 IR Decoy Flares that provide protection against air-to-air and surface-to-air infrared weapon systems. The Advanced Infrared Countermeasure Munition (AIRCMM) consists of the M211 Flares and supplements the M206 Aircraft Countermeasure Flares. The M211 Flares are specifically designed for low flying, slow moving rotary aircraft.

To make sure you have not missed out, check Matt Wagner’s latest videos in the AH-64D Tutorial Series and get stuck into DCS: AH-64D | TADS Part II.

For more information on the current Early Access release state, read the DCS: AH-64D Mini Update.

In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll talk about use of unguided rockets.

The AH-64D uses the M261 rocket pod with up to two pods per stub-wing. At early access release we’ll include the M151 high explosive, M229 high explosive 17-pounders, M257 illumination, M274 smoke, and M282 multi-purpose penetrator 2.75-inch rockets.

While it is possible for the CP/G to employ rockets, it is very seldom ever done outside of training. Rather, rockets are the domain of the pilot. The CP/G earns their keep by providing accurate laser ranging and steering commands to the pilot via the Rocket Steering cursor and TADS. This is termed coop mode, and I’ll show this later in the video.

In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll discuss an alternate mean of aiming rockets using the Line-of-Sight Reticle and Rocket Steering Cursor.

There are multiple techniques to deliver rockets in the 64, and we hope this option will be useful. There is no correct technique, only the one that works the best for you.

Today we integrated Offset Aim Points (OAP) into our internal version. This will allow you to create two offsets from a Steerpoint (OA1 and OA2) from which you set a point to conduct an attack when set as the SPI. This is normally done on the AG radar page (TGP is possible too), and often when a good radar track cannot be had on the programmed Steerpoint or target.

On the HUD, they appear as a diamond when selected from the Sighting Options at OSB 10.
