Hi everyone,

We are in the final push now and very much on track for the 30th! Recently, we’ve been completing the last items we want for the early access release:

1- Almost done with the moving map, we just need to add text outlines to make the text more visible.
2- Almost all HUD symbology for early access weapons is now in place and functional.
3- Radar-directed AA Gun, AIM-9, and AIM-7 is implemented.
4- Waypoint designated target (TGT) point is now implemented for AUTO bombing.
5- EW page / ALE functions are functional and most audio tones have been enabled. ASPJ though will come after early access launch.
6- Our last task is implementing HUD designation of a TGT point. Almost done, but a few items to finish up.
7- The Hornet Early Access Guide is still in work and will probably be released with the game on the 30th.

Thanks,
Matt “Wags” Wagner

...an airplane by it's nature wants to fly, and if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or by a deliberately incompetent pilot, it will fly. A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces in opposition to each other, and if there is any disturbance in this delicate balance the helicopter stops flying; immediately and disastrously.

Fly DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Now!

It’s here at last! We are thrilled to announce the availability of DCS: F/A-18C Hornet from our DCS e-shop.

Our Hornet is the culmination of more than 40 man years of intense research, technology development, art creation, and ground-breaking coding. The Hornet brings the first, true, multi-role fighter to the skies of DCS World with equally impressive air-to-surface and air-to-air capabilities.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet is initially being released as Early Access, with several features to be added during the Early Access period. This includes several sensors, weapons, and sub-systems.

Immagine

About the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet

The F/A-18C Hornet is a single seat, twin engine, supersonic multi-role air superiority fighter. It combines extreme maneuverability, a deadly arsenal of weapons, and the ability to operate from an aircraft carrier. Operated by several nations, this multi-role fighter has been instrumental in many theatres from 1986 onwards.

The Hornet is equipped with a large suite of sensors that includes a multi-mode radar, targeting pod and helmet mounted sight. In addition to its internal 20mm cannon, the Hornet is armed with a large assortment of unguided bombs and rockets, laser and GPS-guided bombs, air-to-surface missiles of all sorts, and both radar and infrared-guided air-to-air missiles. This results in amazing gameplay potential.

The Hornet is also known for its extreme, slow-speed maneuverability in a dogfight. We have gone to great lengths to model the flight aerodynamics and fly-by-wire flight control system of the Hornet to allow you to experience the real feeling of power and extreme capabilities this aircraft has to offer. Although incredibly deadly, the Hornet is also a very easy aircraft to fly.

Being a carrier aircraft, the Hornet also comes with the most detailed aircraft carrier ever created for a PC game. Catapult from the “boat”, strike a large assortment of targets that only DCS World can offer, then “call the ball” and land back on the carrier. DCS: F/A-18C Hornet in DCS World provides the most rich and authentic digital combat aviation you will ever experience!

DCS World War II News

In commemoration of the June 1944 D-Day landings, we have several DCS World War II updates we’d like to bring you. We see DCS World War II as a very important component of DCS World and it will continue to grow with new features, content, and numerous improvements. We are just getting started.

Normandy 1944 Map for DCS World Update

Working with the Ugra Media, the developer or the Normandy map, we will be releasing a free update to this map in June. This map is the ideal battleground for our warbirds that focuses on northern France in the summer on 1944.

More screenshots

Coming improvements include:
  • More detailed objects and realistic airfield textures. The textures now reflect the more dusty, lighter, sandy surfaces
  • Removal of permanent structures from ALG airfields
  • Concrete surfaces for the airfields of Evreux, Carpiquet, and Tangmere
  • Shallow water zones along the coastal areas
  • New stone bridges
  • More structures like farm houses outside the detailed areas of the map
  • Added more objects like windmills
  • Improved performance

Free DCS: World War II Assets Pack Update

To provide a more realistic and populated World War II environment, new assets are being added to the World War II assets pack this month.

Immagine

More screenshots

Some of these new units include:
  • M12 gun motor carriage
  • M30 cargo carrier
  • M2A1/M3 halftrack
  • StuG IV
  • Sd.Kfz. 234/2 “Puma”
  • Sd.Kfz. 7 artillery tractor
  • Sd.Kfz. 251
  • Sd.Kfz. 2 Kettenkrad
  • Horch staff car
  • Barrage balloons
  • LCVP Higgins boats
  • UK soldier

There is no additional charge for all of these new units.
Many new air, ground and sea units will be coming in later updates.

Spitfire LF Mk.IX Update

Also this month will see the completion of the Spitfire with a clipped wing version, the ability to carry bombs, and the ability to mount both a slipper tank or external fuel tank. The will give our Spitfire far more mission capability like cross-channel patrols and ground attacks.

Immagine

More screenshots

This will make the DCS Spitfire an incredibly accurate simulation of the Spitfire LF Mk.IX, with a fully interactive cockpit, detailed sub-systems, and a professional flight model. Based on hands-on feedback from pilots that have hundreds of hours in the Spitfire LF Mk.IX, we are very proud of this showcase title.

In cooperation with talented 3rd parties, we also have some amazing, new Spitfire campaigns coming to DCS World that take advantage of these new features.

Static Templates Coming to DCS World

Static Templates are sets of objects that can be placed on the map and saved as a single entity. After a template is created, it can be saved and shared with others. Multiple instances of a Static Template can then be placed to create more interesting and populated missions. In addition to statics, AI units can also be placed in the template.

Examples of potential Static Templates include:
  • Atlantic Wall fortifications
  • Harbor traffic at Le Havre and Cherbourg
  • Battlefield front lines
  • Munition and fuel depots
  • Headquarters units
  • Airfield support units

Static templates allow better performance and faster construction of missions and campaigns. This will be valuable tool to offer even better gameplay content.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Update

Our Hornet is now available from both our e-Shop and Steam. We are ecstatic about its reception and all the kind words. It makes us happy to see you so pleased with the results of our work, thank you!

Our immediate focus is on addressing the most pressing errors and creating a solid foundation from which to start adding the new functions and systems. Additionally, we are working on content like new interactive training missions, single missions, and a campaign!
We also have several new Hornet academic videos to help you learn this aircraft more quickly. More such videos will come as new functions and systems are added.

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet - Hornet Mini-Updates

Probably for the next update will be an initial implementation of IFF for the Hornet. Attached are a couple of looks.

A diamond-shaped TD box indicated a negative IFF response (hostile), whereas a standard, square TD box indicates a valid IFF handshake (friendly). Initially, this will be done automatically as part of an STT/LTWS/DTWS (L&S and D2) designation.

At a later point we will investigate a more in-depth IFF system using the encrypted-code system. However, this is a VERY complex system that will take a lot of time, and we currently have much higher priorities. Furthermore, a code-based IFF system will also involve a significant re-write of portions of the AI code.

Also, in the next update we changed the manual (M) radio modulation selection logic to be more realistic based on recent information. The modulation selection will now be in a single Option Select Window and toggle between AM and FM (rather than separate OSW windows). The inability of an entered frequency not be saved (reverts back to default) has also been resolved.
