Southwest Afghanistan Available in the latest DCS version

Afghanistan, often called the “crossroads of Asia” is a landlocked country located at the intersection of Central and South Asia. It shares borders with Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China.

Historical Significance
In the 19th century, Afghanistan became a buffer state in “The Great Game” between the British Empire and Tsarist Russia, both of whom sought control over Central Asia.

Later, the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989) highlighted the strategic importance of Afghanistan in the Cold War geopolitics. The rugged terrain also played a pivotal role in the resistance mounted by Mujahideen fighters against the Soviet forces.

Post September 2001, Afghanistan became a central theatre in the Global War on Terrorism, leading to a prolonged conflict involving the United States and NATO forces, who aimed at dismantling terrorist groups whilst stabilising the region.

Operational Challenges
Operating in DCS: Afghanistan presents unique challenges due to geography, climate and socio-political dynamics. The combination of high altitude environments and limited infrastructure requires adaptive strategies from foreign military forces and highlights the importance of local knowledge and alliances.

Key features:

  • 14 airfields including: Bost, Camp Bastion, Chaghcharan, Dwyer, Farah, Herat, Kandahar, Maymana, Zahiraddin, Faryabi, Qala i Naw, Shindand, Tirinkot, Zaranj
  • Improved clipmap technology
  • Improved Field and town materials

The Afghanistan map is highly detailed with fields, cities, towns and thousands of smaller settlements. We implemented a new method of collecting, processing, importing and exporting data are being OSM type data, as well as determining surface types from satellite images, which are processed, optimised and vectored for subsequent implementation into the terrain module.

You can purchase only the DCS: Southwest Afghanistan region offering you a 471’381 km2 area and 12 highly detailed airfields or the full region 1’449’216 km2 terrain which will be offering 28 highly detailed airfields

Kola map Development Progress

The next DCS update contains superb new summer textures for the DCS: Kola map. So far, all summer textures have been replaced with more refined images.

The textures are now being generated using custom scripts that use multiple sources, including satellite imagery as well as aerial photography. Furthermore, the upcoming update includes the EFKS Kuusamo Airport and the EFIV Ivalo Airport with various towns and cities added around the new airfields.

The colours at XLMV Severomorsk-3 Naval Air Base, UMOE Monchegorsk and ULAK Severomorsk-1 have also been updated. ESNJ Jokkmokk has been reworked too. Please stay tuned for the next update and make sure you update your DCS so you too can enjoy these fantastic enhancements!

Kola Development Progress

Progress So Far
Compared to the initial release, the Kola map now has substantially improved natural terrain that includes a more detailed elevation mesh, summer and winter ground textures, vegetation, shorelines, lakes, and rivers. The initial focus area for airfields and infrastructure spans the Finland-Russia border regions, but we’ve also started adding more detail to parts of Norway and Sweden. If you were holding off on purchasing this wonderful map, now is the time to experience this epix terrain.

Major updates since the Early Access release:
  • The addition of a complete set of high-resolution, winter textures that will be critical for the upcoming ‘Arctic Thunder’ campaigns by Reflected Simulations and Baltic Dragon.
  • The summer textures have greatly improved with much higher resolution that improves the low altitude environment.
  • The addition/improvement of four highly-detail regions covering four airfields in Finland: Rovaniemi (EFRO), Kemi / Tornio (EFKE), Kuusamo (EFKS), and Ivalo (EFIV); and five in Russia: Severomorsk-3 (XLMV), Severomorsk-1 (ULAK), RU-1110 (UMOE), RU-4464 (UOLE), and Murmansk (ULMM).
  • Added or improved two road runways in Finland (at Vuojärvi and Rovaniemi), three airfields in Norway: Bodø (ENBO), Kirkenes (ENKR), and Lakselv (ENNA); and five in Sweden: Kiruna (ESNQ), Jokkmokk (ESNJ), Luleå (ESPA), Vidsel (ESPE), and Kalixfors (ESUK).
  • An improved road and railroad network connected within the coverage area that includes bridges and tunnels that allow AI routing across the map.
Many new cities, towns, infrastructure, tunnels and other objects have been added to the map.

Future Plans
The next release will see the inclusion of Andoya (ENAN) airfield in Norway and Alakurtti (RU-0059) airfield in Russia with some additional infrastructure in the surrounding areas. Orbx has also reviewed a series of bugs and errors aiming for small performance improvements.

Future releases will see the addition of more airfields and surrounding infrastructure including: Evenes (ENEV), Bardufoss (ENDU), Kittilä Airport (EFKT), Enontekiö Airport (EFET), Pudasjärvi Airfield (EFPU), and Sodankylä Airfield (EFSO). Beyond these, Cold War-era installations, military airfields, and other key points of interest are also planned.

The upcoming Arctic Thunder campaign by Reflected Simulations & Baltic Dragon for the Kola map will consist of two scenarios: one for a Finnish Air Force F/A-18C and another for an USAF F-16C Viper. Both will share the same storyline and missions making it possible to play from different perspectives.

Afghanistan Development Report

Work continues on both the Afghanistan Southwest region and the entire Afghanistan map. The ground mesh resolution across Afghanistan has been improved along with optimisation and bug fixes across the Southwest. The road network has been enhanced, especially the mountain roads. Additionally, ground geometry artefacts have been corrected.

Object model inaccuracies have been fixed and unique airfield objects have been added to diversify the scenery. We are also pleased to inform you that the Normal Map textures across the entire Afghanistan map have been refined for improved low-altitude visuals.

Our team is mainly focused on finalising the East region of the Afghanistan map. Work on the airfields of Bagram, Bamiyan, Gardez, Ghazni, Jalalabad, Kabul, Khost, Sharana, and Urgun is going well and the final stages of creating unique scenes for these airfields and their operational logic within the DCS Core is underway.

We have achieved significant progress on new roads, rivers, and lakes, as well as unique object models for the capital city of Kabul. We look forward to your feedback.
